Brandt Snedeker was potentially one of the names some USA fans expected to be in contention to be named 2025 Ryder Cup captain when it emerged that Tiger Woods had turned down the role.
The US team sprung a huge shock when they announced Keegan Bradley as the next Ryder Cup captain. Even when Tiger Woods turned down the captaincy, few would have ever imagined that Bradley would get the nod. Not only was Bradley enjoying a brilliant spell in his playing career, but it also appeared that there were a number of names already in line.
At 43, Brandt Snedeker is one of those who seems to be at the right stage of his career to take on that kind of role.
Snedeker ended up being named as an assistant captain for the Presidents Cup this year once Bradley made the team as a player. He will also be alongside Bradley at Bethpage next year – so it certainly appears that Snedeker is in line to take on the role at some stage.
Brandt Snedeker suggests whether he wants to captain the US in the Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup
And speaking on Talk of the TOUR, the 2012 FedEx Cup champion suggested that he would gladly take on the challenge – even if Royal Montreal proved to be something of an eye opener.
“I would love to. After being a part of this last one, I realise how much hard work it is, but I realise how much fun it is to be around the guys and realise that captaincy’s more just a flag holder for the guys,” he said.

“We’re there to take all the pressure off them, to make sure that they have fun, to put them in a situation to play as great golf as possible. Let them go have fun and enjoy it because this is super stressful. It is a tough week for those guys, it’s a lot of time on the golf course, a lot of time doing stuff off the golf course. And so, after being part of a couple as a player and now an assistant captain, it was really cool to see the difference and what goes into it.
“Yeah, I’d love to have that opportunity, but right now, my focus is trying to help Keegan get this thing ready for New York because it’s going to be crazy, it’s going to be insane, and we have to have a clear plan for how we’re going to handle it.”
The class of the 2012 may extend Ryder Cup captaincy run
Snedeker would be the fifth consecutive player from the 2012 US Ryder Cup team to subsequently captain the side if he followed Bradley.
Long-time stalwarts Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker took charge of 2018 and 2021 respectively, with the latter seeing US secure the biggest win in Ryder Cup history.
Unfortunately, Zach Johnson could not build on Stricker’s success. The 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome seemed to be a miserable experience for the visitors. But that will only make Bradley’s side even more desperate to regain the trophy at Bethpage.
| Player | Event(s) captained |
| Tiger Woods | 2019 Presidents Cup |
| Keegan Bradley | 2025 Ryder Cup |
| Zach Johnson | 2023 Ryder Cup |
| Steve Stricker | 2017 Presidents Cup, 2021 Ryder Cup |
| Jim Furyk | 2018 Ryder Cup, 2024 Presidents Cup |
Woods – who captained the Presidents Cup team in 2019 – may well be in contention for 2027, while Webb Simpson will surely also captain a team at some stage. But it appears that Snedeker will also do all he can to ensure that he gets the opportunity to captain his country.
