After an underwhelming first round at the CME Group Tour Championship, Nelly Korda appears to have begun her charge, with the world number one now tied for fourth at the halfway mark.
Nelly Korda was in a tie for 44th after the opening round of the CME Group Tour Championship, having made three birdies and three bogeys on Thursday. But she was able to capitalise on the much kinder conditions on Friday morning to bring her tournament to life.
And there may have been no shot which would have sent out a more ominous message to her rivals than her approach on the third hole. Korda was clearly unhappy with her drive on the hole, pushing the ball into the right rough.
Nevertheless, the 26-year-old hit a brilliant shot with her eight iron, holing out for eagle. She would not drop a shot all day to rise up the leaderboard.

But there was also some superb scrambling in her round of 66. Korda sent her approach on the seventh over the back of the green and down towards the cart path. However, she was able to get up and down with a sumptuous chip.

And speaking on Golf Channel, Brandel Chamblee suggested that that shot may have been even better than her hole out earlier in the round.
“We’ll talk a lot and see the [second] shot into the third, but I think from a difficulty standpoint, this might have been one of, if not the most difficult shot she had all day. On the upslope, into the grain, so easy to come up a little bit short right there, but that was just spot on and a beautiful save,” he said.
Korda’s win at The ANNIKA will have leaders at the CME Group Tour Championship looking over their shoulder
Korda will take so much confidence from the way she fought back to win The ANNIKA just last week. At the turn, it appeared that she simply had too much to do to win at Pelican Golf Club after two bogeys on her front nine in the final round.
However, she would, of course, make five birdies on the spin to win by three – securing her seventh win of the year.
So the four shot deficit to Angel Yin with two rounds to go will probably seem like nothing to Korda right now.
