Phil Mickelson returns to the PGA Championship this week, where he is one of 15 full-time LIV Golf players to take on the major championship.

The 2025 PGA Championship gets underway on Thursday, with Quail Hollow playing host for the second time.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is in the field, with Rory McIlroy also taking part having won The Masters earlier this season.

The PGA Championship represents the second major of 2025, followed by the US Open and The Open Championship.

Xander Schauffele is the defending champion heading into Quail Hollow, having triumphed at Valhalla Golf Club last time out.

Brandel Chamblee disagrees with many people over Phil Mickelson

And before the tournament gets going, Brandel Chamblee has discussed if he thinks McIlroy can become one of the greatest golfers of all time.

“I do,” Chamblee said on Golf Channel. “First of all I think he has the kind of swing and game which will endure.

“It is a long, oily, beautiful motion. It is very lyrical like Sam Snead. He has plenty of power to spare so when he does lose some… and he has been picking it up as he has gone along, he has not been losing it from 28.

“Typically 28, 29 or 30 is about as fast as you are going to swing but he has been picking up speed year after year which is a testament to the training he has been doing.

“There is great examples of athletes with almost mind-blowing longevity in the case of Tom Brady, Roger Federer and [Rafael] Nadal as well.

“So I think he has that in mind. But I do think that he is a student of history and he will know what it means to get over seven, eight or nine major championships.

“You get up there and start being talked about in the same way that Tom Watson is talked about, the same way that Arnold Palmer is talked about.

“To not be just the best European of all time but be one of the greatest players of all time. That is rarified air to get in the top 10 players of all time.

“People will say Phil Mickelson is in there. I personally would not put him in there. To me he is around 15th in the world. That is rarified air in the top 10.

“Who are you going to kick out? Are you going to kick out people with seven, eight or nine major championships?

“And by the way that is maybe not even putting Harry Vardon in there. Who are you going to kick out? It’s Jack [Nicklaus], it’s [Bobby] Jones, it’s [Ben] Hogan, it’s Snead, it’s Palmer, it’s [Gene] Sarazen, it’s Watson.

“They didn’t have 42 golf tournaments back then and they barely had four major championships and they had to get on a boat to play in The Open [when Sarazen was playing].”

Where does Phil Mickelson rank in the all-time major wins list?

Mickelson has, of course, enjoyed huge success throughout his career so far, with the American now competing on LIV Golf.

Aged 54, he has six major championship wins to his name, and that includes glory at the PGA Championship in 2005 and 2021.

Three wins at The Masters is also on his honours list, with the veteran having also tasted success at The Open.

US Open success has yet to be achieved, but his current focus will be on adding to his tally at this week’s PGA Championship.
