There have been plenty of occasions over the last few years when the players at the top of the game have implored the likes of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf to find a way to agree the kind of deal which brings the sport back together.
For much of LIV Golf‘s first year in existence, those associated with the PGA Tour appeared to have no interest in doing business with the league. It is hard to imagine that golf has ever been more tribal.
The framework agreement in June 2023 changed everything. Suddenly those who had defended the PGA Tour rightly felt betrayed. Meanwhile, the rhetoric started to change from both sides as it became clear that the two tours were working towards a deal.
Rory McIlroy‘s comments since 2022 will be studied for years to come, with the Northern Irishman going from one of the staunchest defenders of the PGA Tour to being one of the biggest supporters of a deal. McIlroy came in for criticism from Johnson Wagner for claiming that he has benefitted from LIV Golf starting up.
Brandel Chamblee makes a claim about the PGA Tour as talks with LIV Golf continue
But with White House talks apparently not going as well as some hoped between the PGA Tour and the PIF, it was interesting that McIlroy has more recently said that the PGA Tour does not necessarily need a deal.

And it seems that Brandel Chamblee would agree with McIlroy’s assessment. Speaking to Bunkered about the current situation within the game, Chamblee insisted that it is LIV who need a deal much more than the PGA Tour, particularly as he feels that the tour is nowhere near as impressive as it tells itself.
“Well, okay. So, the game of golf has never been better. It’s never been more popular. As far as the professional game is concerned, I’m well aware of what’s going on there. I’m in the middle of it. I talk about it all the time, I mean, you know, LIV tried to destroy the PGA Tour, and they poached a lot of well-known players, but those players’ games have deteriorated, and they’re not quite as compelling as they all think they are. And the PGA Tour can totally exist and get along without them. LIV bought a moment in time, that’s all,” he said.
The striking comments Tiger Woods made about the PGA Tour and LIV Golf coming back together
The big problem the decision-makers are potentially now having is deciding just how the golfing landscape will look once the three main tours are back on the same page.
It was striking how Tiger Woods said the best players would be playing together again when talking about the discussions at the Genesis Invitational. Clearly, the three tours cannot continue as they are if they are going to allow the likes of McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, and Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau to face off more than a handful of times per year.
The PGA Tour can take encouragement from how they have navigated the last few years. But with the PIF not exactly struggling financially, there is always going to be a concern about the threat they pose.
It would be extremely dangerous for the PGA Tour to become complacent and assume that they can walk away from the negotiating table.
