While Tiger Woods did not feel that he was ready to play at the Genesis Invitational this week, the 15-time major champion did make an appearance on Sunday at Torrey Pines – and provided an exciting update on the future of the game.

Of course, golf fans have been waiting for news concerning the future of the golfing landscape. The framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the PIF was announced back in June 2023.

There have been few updates in the months since. Fans were forced to take comfort simply from the fact that Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan were paired together for one day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last year.

But things appear to have stepped up a notch more recently.

Tiger Woods provides an encouraging update on talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf

Monahan and Adam Scott have met with President Donald Trump as they look to push through a deal between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. And it seems that Tiger Woods has provided an encouraging update at the Genesis Invitational.

Speaking to CBS Sports, Woods insisted that everything is moving in the right direction – and he confirmed that something could be fairly imminent.

“I think we are in a very positive place right now. We had a meeting with the President. Unfortunately I had some other circumstances which came up. But Jay and Adam did great during the meeting. We have another subsequent meeting coming up. I think that things are going to heal quickly. We are going to get this game going in the right direction. It has been going in the wrong direction for a number of years. The fans want all of us to play together, all the top players playing together, and we are going to make that happen,” he said.

“It could be this year or very soon this year,” Woods was then asked.

“Yes and yes,” he replied.

The big question facing the PGA Tour and LIV Golf following Tiger Woods’ comments

The big question facing the game concerns one of the comments Woods made. Many players have argued that the game’s civil war needs to end so that the best players can face each other much more often.

However, there appears to be almost no way that the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and the DP World Tour can continue as they are while also offering their best players the chance to compete against each other regularly.

It is hard to imagine that the PGA Tour will offer much of a compromise, particularly as the majority of their notable events take place between January and September anyway.

Perhaps the latter months of the year will provide LIV Golf with the window which will allow it to continue after a deal has been struck.

It seems that we may not have to wait too much longer to find out.
