A brand new PGA Tour rule change is now in place for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands this week.

Scottie Scheffler headlines a stacked field for the eighth and final signature event of the 2024 season.

Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas are just a few of the other big names set to challenge this week.

One notable absence comes in the form of Rory Mcllroy, who is taking time off after narrowly missing out on the US Open.

Information relayed by NBC suggests a memo sent to players included the ‘scorecard return’ adjustment. The alteration will allow players a 15-minute grace period to correct a scorecard even if they have left the scoring area.

The change comes after Spieth was involved in a controversial ruling during the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club.

The former Masters champion signed for a 72 instead of a 73 and was subsequently disqualified.

Spieth, however, had returned within the 15-minute window to rectify his mistake.

Good call from the PGA Tour

This feels like a smart move from the authorities.

At the time of Spieth’s disqualification, Schauffele revealed the American was struggling with illness and perhaps rushed his scorecard in order to use the facilities.

Clearly, there was no malice behind Spieth’s actions.

Allowing players 15 minutes to come back and alter their scorecards will prevent any errors – like Spieth’s – from happening again.

If a player is now disqualified due to issues with a scorecard, something more sinister could be at play.
