The modern game of golf very much relies on being a big hitter but when it comes to actually being accurate with those big hits, not many can manage it.
Distance has become the big thing in golf as new equipment and better athletes in the sport mean the ball is travelling further than ever.
The likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are all capable of launching it over 320 yards on a consistent basis and if conditions suit, we’ve seen drives north of 400 yards.
Over the years, we’ve seen players from all eras come along and catch the eye with their distance off the tee.
Tiger Woods was the obvious one when he emerged, while Bubba Watson and then Dustin Johnson also got the ball flying.
However, according to former US Ryder Cup player Boo Weekley, it’s a lesser known player who was the longest and most accurate in his time on TOUR.

Boo Weekley names the most accurate long hitter he played with on the PGA Tour
A player like Boo Weekley – now 52 – has played with some of the greatest to ever do it.
Weekley was firmly around for the ‘Tiger-era’ and has seen the likes of Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and more all dominate at times.
However, according to Weekley, it is another former Ryder Cup man, J.B. Holmes, who impressed him the most.
“We could understand each other language wise as we are both kind of rednecks! It was fun playing with J.B because at that time he was bombing it. I mean he was probably the longest guy I have ever played with who could actually golf his ball day in and day out,” Weekley explains.
“We would discuss certain shots and certain tee balls, and being able to do certain things together, I could talk him off the ledge or he could talk me off the ledge. That was one thing we could do with each other and we both understood what our girls were.
“We were playing together and we were like alright you need to hit the fairway here, I missed the fairway so you need to hit it. It was pretty simple because we actually had a good communication together and we were friends.”
The longest hitters on the PGA Tour in 2025
As we all know, the modern game is full of big hitters and we’re seeing the emergence of some young stars right now who are taking things to another level.
The average driving distance is longer than ever and at an average of 313 yards, Aldrich Potgieter is the main man right now.
Still, there are others well above the 300 mark too, with the PGA Tour average coming in at 294.2 yards.
| Player | Average driving distance (yards) |
| Aldrich Potgieter | 313.4 |
| Chris Gotterup | 309.7 |
| Niklas Norgaard | 309.7 |
| Rory McIlroy | 308.5 |
| Jesper Svensson | 308.4 |
Whether the game will continue to see the distance rise or the golf all roll back and other equipment changes will hinder that, remains to be seen.
But right now, most players can bomb them just like Weekley speaks of Holmes here.
