Akshay Bhatia has explained why the Rocket Mortgage Classic course really suits a strong part of his game.

The left-handed American currently sits tied for first on 13 under alongside Englishman Aaron Rai. The 22-year-old made five birdies during a bogey-free 67 to place himself firmly in contention heading into the weekend.

Rai also enjoyed a profitable day at Detroit Golf Club, making seven birdies to card an impressive seven- under 65 and set up a Saturday pairing with Bhatia.

Elsewhere, defending champion Rickie Fowler failed to keep pace with the leaders after shooting a level-par 72.

15-year-old Miles Russell’s debut PGA Tour event was cut short after his finished four shots outside the cut line at even par.

Speaking during his post-round press conference, Bhatia claimed the number of shots played from inside 150 yards really suited his game.

“I don’t think it matters [being left-handed],” he explained. “It’s a ball strikers’ golf course. There are a lot of wedges.

“That’s kind of my strong suit, especially inside 150 yards. I think that’s why I like this golf course, and I don’t think there’s a difference between being lefty and righty.”

Akshay Bhatia 2024 PGA Tour record

Bhatia currently sits 15th in the FedEx Cup standings and has every chance of qualifying for the Tour Championship at East Lake.

The left-hander already has one PGA Tour win this season, coming at the Valero Texas Open. Furthermore, positive finishes at the US Open and Travelers Championship have seen the 22-year-old catch the eye in recent weeks.

His latest performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic is just another example of how well he’s playing at the moment.

In a weaker field this week, Bhatia will fancy his chances of landing his second win of 2024.

The challenge for the American is to compete in the bigger events when Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele are also in contention.
