The DP World Tour have been dealt a big blow as the season starts to kick into gear, with a four-time winner set to join LIV Golf.

There has been plenty of speculation over who could follow Jon Rahm to the breakaway tour following his surprise defection late last year.

So far, no other Ryder Cup heroes have gone, with Tommy Fleetwood amongst those not interested in a switch at this stage.

But it appears that a player who arguably should have been in Rome last year is going to follow Rahm to the Saudi-backed tour.

Adrian Meronk heading for LIV Golf

According to a report from The Times, Adrian Meronk is expected to complete a move in time for their season opener in Mexico next week.

Meronk has withdrawn from the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on the PGA Tour this week. And it seems that he will instead by lining up on the LIV tour in the very near future.

Meronk was named as the DP World Tour player of the year by the other members for last season. And he won three times in 2023. So it is definitely a major coup for LIV.

The report notes that Meronk was bitterly disappointed to miss out on making the Ryder Cup team. So it will be interesting to know if Luke Donald staying on as captain for 2025 played any part at all in his decision. Rahm’s departure also opens the door for LIV players to feature for Team Europe in New York.

Big blow for DP World Tour

Obviously, the financial incentive is obvious for any player who departs the DP World Tour or PGA Tour to join LIV. But it is also getting easier and easier for players to defect given that a number of the world’s best are now plying their trade there.

It is a big setback for the DP World Tour in particular. The 30-year-old looks to have a very bright future ahead. And they would have hoped that he would be one of their key figures for this year.
