When you think of the best golfers in the world, it’s not often you find yourself looking at the some of the countries in Eastern Europe to find the biggest names.
While golf is big in Europe and we see top stars emerge from places like Spain, Sweden, the UK, and more, it’s very rare we come across players from countries further east like Russia, Poland, or even Turkey.
Of course, there can be exceptions to the rule but in the main, the top 100 on the OWGR is dominated by American players and more recognisable countries in the golfing world.
Thankfully, though, some players are making a push from places we don’t often expect and that’s very much the case this weekend at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship on the PGA Tour.
Egor Eroshenko makes PGA Tour history as he makes the cut at the Butterfield Bermuda
In what is a good news story for the whole of golf and the country of Russia, 22-year-old player Egor Eroshenko has become the first Russian player to make a cut in a PGA Tour event.

Eroshenko helped himself to a second round score of four-under par to go three-under for the tournament after two rounds and earn his place on the weekend in Bermuda.
With Justin Lower winning on -12 right now, Eroshenko has little chance of coming out on top.
However, he’ll be happy to write his own name in the history books while at the same time, he’ll become the top ranked Russian golfer in the OWGR.
“I’m super excited,” said Eroshenko after his round.
“I’m still kind of in the fog not figuring out what’s happening, but hopefully I can go grab some lunch and realize the cut is made and hoping for a good weekend.”
Golfers come from far and wide and enjoy success on the PGA Tour
While we all know the dominant players over the years have often come from countries which are a hotbed for golf talent, there are those who shine from countries where it’s not as common.
The biggest example would be Vijay Singh, who is one of the highest earners ever on the PGA Tour and one of the most successful. Hailing from Fiji, Singh is a three-time major winner and won 34 times on the PGA Tour alone.
Likewise, albeit not quite as rare, the brilliant Gary Player hails from South Africa. Of course, the likes of Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els and more represent South Africa brilliantly as well.
Sepp Straka is flying the Austrian flag right now and is a top 40 player, while Adrian Meronk is doing Poland proud as well.
It very much goes to show that golf is truly a global game and we just never know where the next star might emerge from.
