Scottie Scheffler shot a five-under 66 on day two of the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale.

Starting on the ninth, Scheffler made three birdies on the back before picking up two more shots on the front. The world number one didn’t drop a shot either.

Scheffler has played his way into a position to win this week, and it’s largely down to his impeccable approach play. Scheffler is third in strokes gained approach and ninth in strokes gained off the tee.

However, there’s one area which is costing the world number one badly.

Scheffler lost 0.19 strokes on the greens during his second round and is currently ranked 103rd for strokes gained putting over the first 36 holes. What’s more, on Friday, Scheffler made just one putt over ten feet.

Scheffler has now lost two strokes on the greens over the first two rounds – and it feels like the metronomic American is potentially being haunted by an issue which held him back in 2023.

After joining forces with putting guru Phil Kenyon, many thought Scheffler’s woes on the green were behind him. Scheffler was 77th in strokes gained putting last year and ranked number one for putting average.

What’s more, the two-time Masters winner had a 42% one-putt average. There was a lot to like.

Unfortunately, Scheffler’s inability to make putts on Friday at TPC Scottsdale resembled what the golfing world witnessed two years ago.

During the 2023 season, Scheffler ranked 162nd for strokes gained putting and lost 0.3 strokes to the rest of the PGA Tour. What’s more, his one-putt percentage was massively down.

There is, of course, a high chance Scheffler’s current putting woes are just a blip. He’s overcome issues with the flat stick before, and, as the golfing world knows, he only needs to get lukewarm with the putter in hand to rattle off several victories.

A slight improvement in Phoenix and the world number one could quickly be holding his third Waste Management title on Sunday evening.
