Most amateur golfers dream of being able to hit a consistent draw.
When just starting out, players tend to favour a fade, coming over the top in their swing to promote a left-to-right ball flight for right-handed golfers. If a player hits a draw, it’s evidence of a shallower swing path, which is better for a consistent strike.
A draw can add more distance to your shot. They are typically hit with less ball spin, meaning a longer roll-out on more yards! But according to Tiger Woods, most golfers try to achieve this completely the wrong way.
Luckily, the greatest golfer of all time often hands out golf tips to amateurs, and he has a simple way to control your ball flight.

How Tiger Woods thinks golfers should hit a draw
Woods has a simple tip on how to hit a draw or a fade, and it’s all in the setup. He said the key is about which way the club face is pointing.
Speaking in a YouTube tutorial with Fred Couples, Woods explained: “I like to play a slight draw for me, personally. So, I’m always aimed slightly right, face slightly open, and again, closing it slightly at impact.
“Now, if I want to hit the exact opposite shot, for a cut, I stand closer to it… What people don’t realize is, I’ll shut the face down a little bit.
Which four players do you choose?
“Face is open for a draw, and the face is slightly closed for a cut… wherever I want the golf ball to start out at is where I put the face. So if I’m going to start it out to the right, my face is going to be open. And then I try and close it down a little bit, and then hit my little draw.
“A lot of people think that because they have to hook it, they have to shut the face. I don’t like that. It’s hard to control. Wherever I want the ball to start out at is where I have the face.
“If I want to hit a straight ball, high my dad would say, OK… You’re teaching a 4-year-old how to hit the ball high. So my dad would say, ‘Just have a higher follow-through’. So, same shot, higher follow-through, and I hit it higher.”
So if you want to hit a draw, fade, or get more elevation on your shot, follow this golden advice from a 15-time major winner!
Tiger Woods gave an update on potential 2026 return
He was set to make his return to golf shortly, but Woods underwent his seventh back surgery to rule out a comeback in the foreseeable future.
Speaking before his Hero World Challenge event, he was reluctant to put a date on his eventual return.
Woods said, “Let me get back to playing again. Let me do that, and then I’ll figure out what the schedule will be.

“I’m a ways away from that part of it and that type of decision and that type of commitment level.
“Unfortunately, I’ve been through this rehab process before as a step-by-step, and then once I get a feel for practicing, exploding, playing and the recovery process, then I can assess where I’m going to play and how much I’ll play.”
Woods said he’s only been cleared to chip and putt, so we’re a long way from his full return to the sport yet. Hopefully, we can see some on-course action for the greatest of all time in 2026!
