Tommy Fleetwood knows a thing or two about driving the golf ball and like so many in the modern game, he’s got some tips and tricks for the amateur player.
So often we see amateurs struggle off the tee. Normally, it is a slice, or a hook, or sometimes even worse, the ball just doesn’t get up in the air.
With golf courses getting longer and so much more emphasis being on power in the game now, it’s vital that golfers at any level get comfortable with the fundamentals of the actual driver swing first.
As most of us who watch golf know, Tommy Fleetwood is one of the very smoothest players out there with the big stick.
So when he’s listing some top tips to help an amateur with the driver, then it’s worth listening to.

Tommy Fleetwood’s tip to hit more drives like Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy is very much admired around the world for his driving and that includes fellow tour players like Fleetwood.
So, if Fleetwood is giving out the advice on how to be more like Rory, then it’s definitely worth tuning into.
Speaking on Rick Shiels’ YouTube channel previously, Fleetwood revealed just what amateurs need to do to hit better drives.
“The one thing I see and they struggle with is they don’t sweep up on a driver. They tee the ball up high or low wherever it is, they focus so much on making good contact that they hit down with the driver and that then results in a spinny, cutty, sliced drive,” Fleetwood said.
“So there’s a few tips what I do or TOUR players do and what we’d call is working on our attack angle.
“What we do simply is, ball position plays a vital part, knowing where that is. One of the things I like to do is use a tee in the ground. So this will just create something that is going to be a task for you to miss and what I’ll try and do is miss the tee on my follow through. So to miss it, clearly I have to miss it and sweep up on the ball. You’ll hit the ball higher, bit straighter and you’ll hit it longer too.
“You look at a guy like Rory McIlroy, he hits it a long way on the up, launching really high and carrying, so that’s what we try to do.”
Tommy Fleetwood’s driving stats on the PGA Tour in 2025
In the year Tommy Fleetwood finally landed his first ever PGA Tour win by winning the big fish in the TOUR Championship, it’s worth noting his driving has helped him.
Fleetwood is nowhere near one of the longest players on TOUR but he makes up for that in the other metrics.
| Metric | Rank |
| Driving distance | 116th |
| Driving accuracy | 25th |
| Distance from edge of fairway | 45th |
| SG off the tee | 47th |
| Total driving | 45th |
Clearly, things could be better for Fleetwood but given he is top 50 in all but one of the driving metrics, it shows he is doing something right at least.
Now, with that elusive win under his belt, it feels like the sky is the limit for the Southport native.
