If you’re an amateur golfer right now trying to improve at the sport, then there are few better people out there to take note of on the tips front than Scottie Scheffler.

The world number one is renowned in the game for his ball striking and deadly accuracy, both off the tee and from the fairways into greens.

Scheffler has won two majors in 2025 doing just that to the highest level, while his record-breaking score at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson was as good a display of ball striking as you’ll ever see.

At The Open at Royal Portrush, Scheffler delivered yet another masterclass in giving himself looks with his approach shots and unfortunately for the rest of the field, his putter caught fire too.

Still, the secret to Scheffler’s success is minimising mistakes and always giving himself a chance.

And speaking on how he approaches his shots into the green, Scheffler has explained to amateurs just what is going through his mind.

Scottie Scheffler’s tip for golf amateurs to hit more greens

Anyone who watches Scottie Scheffler will wish they could hit a golf ball like him.

Time and again he puts himself into the perfect position on the green and even when he’s not in the ideal spot, he’s rarely too far out in terms of his miss.

Indeed, speaking for TaylorMade back in 2024, Scheffler revealed just what his secret is.

“Basically my thought process is coming into the green I want to hit the highest percentage shot possible, that is going to get me at the worst to be on the green. Typically I am working the ball from the middle of the green towards the pin and the shot I try and hit depends completely on how I feel over the ball and a lot of that depends on where the pin location is,” Scheffler revealed.

“When the location is on the right side of the green, like this front right pin. I believe I have 161 yards to that pin. Since it’s on the right side it is an in-between number for me where I could hit wedge and it may or may not get there, but if I hit nine iron I know the ball is going to get there and it’s a lot easier for me to take some off than add a bunch of yardage to a shot.

“In order for me to add yardage I have got to hit a draw, especially with a shorter club, so at 161 I am going to take nine iron and in order for me to take something off on it, I am going to choke down on it and make a touch of a smaller swing and I am going to try and see that ball curve from the middle of the green towards the pin.”

Scottie Scheffler’s iron play in 2025

Scottie Scheffler’s iron play and approach in 2025 is second to none and put simply, nobody can touch him.

The world number one dominates the statistics, albeit he is not quite top dog in strokes gained across all the different approach metrics.

Still, Scheffler is 2nd in proximity to the hole, 6th in GIR %, 1st overall for SG approach, 3rd from inside 100 yards and then down at 26th for outside 100 yards.

Proximity to hole
GIR percentage6th
SG approach1st
Approach outside 100 yards26th
Approach inside 100 yards3rd
SG Total1st

However, Scheffler is also 1st for SG total, 1st for SG off the tee, and 1st in scoring.

Adding all that together with his superb iron play, and it’s little wonder we’re seeing Scheffler dominate as he is.
