If amateur golfers are going to listen to anyone when it to comes to advice on improving their games, they could do a lot worse than Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy holds numerous records in professional golf, including the most rounds of 67 or lower in the US Open.
It’s very clear to see that McIlroy is one of the very best in the business in all departments of the game.
While the 36-year-old is most well known for his incredible ability with a driver in his hand, his short game is severely underrated.
He always does the simple things very well.
McIlroy has offered amateurs a wide range of advice throughout his career, and now he has lifted the lid on the secret behind playing bump and run shots to perfection.
Rory McIlroy tells amateur golfers how to hit the bump and run shot
McIlroy has wonderfully well-educated hands, and he is capable of hitting every kind of shot around the greens.
However, shot selection when chipping or pitching is hugely important, and sometimes the most simple option is the best one.

Far too often, amateur golfers opt for the highlight reel shot around the greens, when the percentage play would serve them far better.
The simple bump and run is definitely a shot amateur golfers should be using more regularly, and now McIlroy has given some advice on how to perfect that shot.
He said: “Typically for a bump and run, you are going to want to take a wedge or an iron that is a little lower in loft. Usually I chip with a 60 degree or a lob wedge, but today I am going to play with a 52 degree.
“The first thing you are going to want to do with a bump and run is that it’s all about set up. You want to try and keep the ball back in your stance, if anything try to get a little closer to it and get the shaft a little more vertical.
“Then lead a little bit of pressure on your left side to drive the ball forward and to make it run when it’s on the green.
“That is really it. From set up here, everything is on the left side, the club is going left and really from here it’s just rocking your shoulders back and through, picking a little target on the green where you want to land it and then just let it go.“
Rory McIlroy’s stats around the greens over last six seasons
McIlroy has excelled when hitting highly pressurised shots around the greens throughout his career.
Interestingly though, the stats don’t back up the notion that he is a great chipper and pitcher of the ball.
| Year | Strokes gained around the greens | Strokes gained scrambling |
| 2025 | 30th | 11th |
| 2024 | 28th | 17th |
| 2022-23 | 14th | 66th |
| 2021-22 | 43rd | 30th |
| 2020-21 | 71st | 131st |
| 2019-20 | 63rd | 57th |
Sometimes stats don’t tell the whole story though, and McIlroy always passes the so-called ‘eye test’ when it comes to pulling off difficult short game shots.
There aren’t many better in the game at playing the bump and run shot, and if amateur golfers follow McIlroy’s advice, their handicaps should tumble down very quickly indeed.
