Phil Mickelson is one of the best exponents of the short game in the history of professional golf.

So if any amateur golfers require tips on how to chip and pitch the ball better, Mickelson is the man to go to for advice.

The 54-year-old has won six majors and 45 PGA Tour titles throughout his illustrious career to date.

He somewhat tarnished his legacy unfortunately, after joining LIV Golf back in 2022.

However, Mickelson recently left the door open to a potential PGA Tour return, although it has to be said, that’s highly unlikely right now.

For all of his faults, the six-time major champion has actually done a lot of good for the game as well.

And his willingness to always try and help amateur golfers with their short games is something that should be commended.

Phil Mickelson’s key short game tip for amateur golfers

Mickelson has wowed golf fans the world over throughout the years with his expertise in and around the greens.

He is renowned for his famed flop shot, and has a reputation of making the toughest short game shots in golf look easy.

However, perhaps something that he does around the greens is actually overlooked, and that is how he manages to execute the simple chips perfectly more often than not.

And now Mickelson has told amateurs exactly how they can do the same.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Mickelson gave some advice on how amateur golfers can achieve consistent results with their chipping.

He said, There really is only one way to chip effectively because, you’re coming in with no coverage on the ball, you’re coming in with so much loft and the leading edge is coming in first. So you have to have your weight forward and drive your club into the ground. Most people when they do that their hands either comes back, or their weight comes back, and the leading edge comes back and blades it. I believe the technique where you have your weight forward, your hands forward and you drive your club into the ground will be consistent every time. Lay the club flat, move the ball up to your left toe, lay the face flat and just drive that face down into the ground and that ball will pop up like a gem.

Phil Mickelson is exceptional out of bunkers as well

The LIV golfer is a magician out of the sand.

Mickelson once said a shot he hit at the Memorial Tournament in 2006 was the best he ever played out of a bunker.

Here it is in all its glory:

What an incredible talent Mickelson is. To have the ability to pull off a shot like that is truly remarkable.

Any amateurs struggling with their short games would do well to take some advice from Mickelson.
