Justin Rose is one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour, and his improvements on the greens over the past decade or so have not gone unnoticed.

Rose has 12 PGA Tour titles including one major championship to his name, as well as 11 DP World Tour victories.

The 45-year-old is one of the most highly revered players in the modern era, due to his textbook golf swing and his affable nature both on and off the course.

Rose enjoyed an incredibly successful 2025 PGA Tour season, as he managed to get back into the winner’s circle after reigning supreme at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The cornerstone to his success over the season, and that week in Memphis in particular, was his solid putting stroke.

Rose uses the claw grip when he putts, but he has another secret that should help amateur golfers become better putters overnight.

Amateur golfers are always looking for ways to shave a few strokes off their scores.

And there is quite simply no better way for them to do that than to improve their putting.

Courtesy of Rose, all amateur golfers now have a really simple method to use when they’re on the greens – one that doesn’t actually take much time to implement either.

As golfers, we’re always trying to get better, aren’t we? We’re always trying to figure out cleaner ways to get the ball in the hole.

Putting is not always about technique, you’ve got your green read, your visualisation and lining the ball up. Then I try and feel like that’s the last time I think about a line or the technique. I’m not into the flow of it all.

As I’m walking in, I’m trying to be very visual and creative, like I’m trying to see in my mind’s eye the line, almost paint it back to the ball.

As I’m walking in, I’m beginning to naturally just grab my sleeve and tuck it in under my arm.

I don’t have any practice swings because I trust my stroke a lot more. I kind of always feel like I’m aware of the geometry of my hand positions and make sure everything is set nicely.

Then it’s all about keeping my eyes really still and then that rhythm of tick-tock. The more intense the environment, the more the pressure putts you have, the more you want to keep your hands out of it. So for me, by pinching in my clothes here, and creating that contact point between my left arm and my chest, I feel like I can control the putter face so much better.

Justin Rose’s PGA Tour putting stats over the past eight seasons

Rose is actually most well known for his supreme ball-striking, so much so that his impressive putting actually goes under the radar.

Here are his putting stats from the past eight years on the PGA Tour:

SeasonStrokes gained putting rank
202555th
202497th
2022-2326th
2021-2220th
2020-2136th
2019-20110th
2018-1917th
2017-1821st

Aside from the 2019-20 and 2024 seasons, which were quite clearly anomalies, Rose has been a consistently strong putter over the past eight season.

His method of tucking his shirt under his armpit when putting has clearly enabled him to replicate a solid motion through impact more consistently.

Why not try it? Rose’s secret to success on the greens may well help you lower your handicap.
