Jordan Spieth may be going through a tough period right now, but his ability to get the ball up and down from any given position is still up there with the very best in the world.
Spieth is one of the most popular players in the game, mostly because of his flair and imagination around the greens.
The 31-year-old from Dallas, Texas, made a name for himself for his ability to turn bogeys into pars, or even birdies!
However, he has definitely gone off the boil over the past few years in pretty much every single department of his game.
Spieth still believes he is capable of returning to number one in the world, but that still seems a long way away right now.
One thing that he can always rely on, despite his inconsistency in other departments, is his short game.
Jordan Spieth’s tip for amateurs on how to improve their bunker play
Spieth has played some memorable shots out of the sand in the past, notably in 2017 at the Travelers Championship when he holed out to win and in 2013 at the John Deere Classic when he did the same thing to force a play-off.
During an instructional video, Spieth explained to amateur golfers how to improve their performance out of the sand.

“This is hitting a nice lofted bunker shot, which is one of the more difficult shots in golf,“ Spieth explained.
“We expect to get these up and down and the reason is because we have practiced a lot with the right technique out of a sand trap.
“You want to get real athletic, with a little bit of a wider stance. Same as the flop shot. You want an open face and you want to line up a little left of your target as a right hander, or a right of your target as a left hander.
“What you are going to do is swing where you are aimed with a cut swing. You are going to take it back and be really aggressive with the sand and hit right behind the ball in the sand.
“You want to splash into that real aggressively and the club will carry the ball and the sand out. As long as you are swinging away from the target to where you are lined up, the ball is going to come out high and soft right on line.
“Wide stance, weight is always positioned with the slope. I’m on an up slope here which means my body positioning is exactly with the slope of the sand.
“I am lining up left of target, real athletically, I am going to be aggressive and splash into the sand while I am swinging over to the left.“
Jordan Spieth’s bunker stats on the PGA Tour
Spieth has been incredibly consistent out of the sand over the past 12 seasons.
However, his sand save stats since 2013 perhaps aren’t quite as good as you would imagine.
| Year | Rank |
| 2025 | 41st |
| 2024 | 83rd |
| 2022-23 | 17th |
| 2021-22 | 76th |
| 2020-21 | 35th |
| 2019-20 | 105th |
| 2018-19 | 50th |
| 2017-18 | 79th |

| 2015-16 | 40th |
| 2014-15 | 24th |
| 2013-14 | 19th |
There’s clearly plenty of room for improvement for Spieth regarding his bunker play.
That said, whenever he is in the sand around the greens, you would back him to get his ball up and down more often than not.
And any amateur golfers struggling with their bunker play should take Spieth’s advice on board.
