John Daly has a tip that’ll help amateurs play better instantly and it has nothing to do with swinging a club

John Daly is one of the most naturally gifted golfers to have ever graced the game.

Daly has enjoyed a tremendous career on the PGA Tour as a whole, in spite of his personal struggles at times, with two major championship wins to his name.

The now 59-year-old forged a career for himself with his enormous length off the tee and incredible touch around the greens.

It was only this month when Daly finally had his world record 806-yard drive on a runway beaten by Kyle Berkshire.

The fact that that record has stood for more than 20 years proves just how ahead of his time Daly was when it comes to power off the tee.

Daly claimed that he regularly used to clock up 200mph+ ball speeds when playing on the PGA Tour in the 1990s.

While that may have been a slight exaggeration, there is no doubting that he was the longest player of his generation.

So it is surprising that his latest tip concerns something completely separate from the golf swing itself.

Daly recently took part in a video for Bryson DeChambeau’s YouTube channel.

The 1995 Open champion came out with numerous pearls of wisdom.

However, amateur golfers should take note of one thing he said in particular.

Daly opened up on a simple change amateurs can make to improve their golf games instantly.

He said: It’s all about trying to teach amateurs how to play golf. Get fitted with your grip, not your clubs.

The smaller the grip is, if you put your hands on the club and you take it back and there’s a gap between your left arm and your right hand, you’re screwed, that means you’re not controlling the golf club.

So go and get fitted for grips. Nobody does that. I think the bigger the grip is, the better you’re going to play.

Why thicker grips can improve your golf swing

Firstly, thicker grips should improve the stability of the club face.

That’s because the hands fit around the grip more comfortably and there is less tension when holding the golf club.

This should result in a swing with a smoother and more consistent tempo.

And in turn, that should then lead to straighter golf shots with a tighter ball dispersion.

This is obviously not a magical cure. It will not help three-handicap golfers become scratch players overnight.

However, for the high handicap golfers, thicker grips should help promote more consistent golf shots.
