If you’re an amateur golfer who’s struggling with your putting, there aren’t many better players to learn from than Jason Day.
Amateurs are always on the hunt for putting tips in order to help them improve on the greens, and Day has just offered up some golden advice.
Day recently changed pretty much his entire equipment setup, aside from his trusty old putter.
The Australian is well known for being one of the very best putters on the PGA Tour, and is particularly effective at holing out from inside five feet.
The reason for that is Day’s incredible sound setup and technique.
Now the 2015 PGA Championship winner has shared some priceless advice to help amateur golfers improve their performances on the putting surfaces.
Jason Day’s tips to fix the mistakes he sees amateurs make when putting
During an appearance on Grant Horvat‘s YouTube channel, Day outlined the common mistakes he notices from amateur golfers on the greens.

“These are the first few problems that I see“, he said.
“I don’t mind people having their head back or forward, because it depends on how dominant their eyes are.
“If you have a crooked head, that’s ok. My problem is having shoulders that aren’t level enough. When you have your lead shoulder way too high, that’s just going to promote an up-stroke, so you’re going to go from low to high really quick.
“What that essentially does is when you come into the ball you can come up and hit the bottom of the face which will create a lot of mis-hits and speed control will be tough.
“The last thing I would have you work on, those who have longish backswings with the putter and then stop just after impact.
“If I was going to hit a putt, I would try to match my backswing to my follow through and that would mean that your tempo would be pretty even, you know.
“You can use that technique with that stroke if you want to, if you’re used to that, but I would suggest something easier as in just match it.“
One of the best putters on the PGA Tour vs 14 handicapper stats
Maverick McNealy is commonly known as one of the very best putters in the game.
With that in mind, it’s really interesting to compare his stats to those of the average golfer.
| Putting stats | Maverick McNealy | 14-handicapper |
| Putts per round | 27.7 | 31.8 |
| 1-putt percentage | 46% | 30% |
| 3-putt percentage | 0.97% | 10% |
| 0-3 foot make % | 100% | 94% |
| 3-6 foot make % | 92% | 59% |
| 6-9 foot make % | 70% | 45% |
| Holes per 3-putt | 102.6 | 10.4 |
It’s clear to see from those stats just how many shots mid-handicap amateur golfers are giving up on the greens.
If you only have an hour to spend on practicing your game, the best advice would be to head straight to the putting green rather than the driving range.
