Gary Player’s golfing resume is right up there with the very best.

Player won a truly unbelievable 159 professional golf tournaments worldwide, including 24 PGA Tour titles and nine major championships.

The diminutive South African spends most of his time now offering his opinions on the world of professional golf and providing key tips and tricks for amateurs who are looking to improve their games.

Player is one of the fittest and most hard-working golfers in the history of the game.

His active lifestyle and daily workout routine enables him to play golf regularly, even with his 90th birthday just around the corner.

One of the most interesting things about the nine-time major winner is the time he devotes to helping out amateur golfers, given his hectic schedule.

Player’s golf tips range from how to putt better, to different ways to improve your ball-striking and, indeed, your mental game.

This time though, he warned amateur golfers what not to do.

Gary Player says amateurs must throw three clubs out of their bags

Player has been there and done it at every level of the game.

So if you’re an amateur looking to improve, the South African is someone definitely worth listening to.

Back in 2009, he had a stark warning for amateur golfers about certain golf clubs which they quite simply need to bin.

When speaking during a golf clinic, Player made it very clear which clubs amateur golfers should most definitely not have in their bags.

He said: My advice to every amateur, unless you’re a zero handicap, take your 3-iron, your 5-iron and throw them away. This is the new 5-iron (hybrid). This little club here is so important in golf. You people cannot hit a 5-iron, a 4-iron and a 3-iron. The biggest improvement in golf is the ball and these little clubs here (hybrids).

Despite the fact that this video is 16 years ago, the advice from Player is still extremely relevant in this day and age.

Even the best players in the world are switching to hybrids and seven-woods these days!

Gary Player tells amateurs the ‘secret’ to driving the ball well

Player recently explained to amateurs how to create a more consistent, repeatable motion off the tee with the driver.

He said: That side of that club is cancer (outside the line).

The secret is this side of the club (inside the line). When you stand here, and you take the club there, you’re looking for trouble.

Every top player in the world, their hands will come slightly on the inside there with the club-head on the outside of his hands.

You don’t see that, you never see your club do that (wrist hinge with club being taken away inside the plane). The man who strikes the ball from the inside and keeps the club on line the longest is the best player.

That’s strong advice from Player. Nothing good happens with a driver in hand when you take the club away outside the line of your hands and the ball.

If you watch all of the best players in the world, they focus on getting their takeaways perfect and then the rest of their swings slot into place.

Amateur golfers out there should follow Player’s advice, if they truly want to improve their games.
