For the average amateur golfer, finding a fairway or greenside bunker can be the stuff of nightmares and potentially ruin any round.

Playing out of the bunker is something the professionals make look so easy and who can forget Bryson DeChambeau’s stunning final hole chip to set up his US Open win in 2024.

Still, that is Bryson DeChambeau, one of the best golfers in the world.

For us mere mortals on a golf course, getting out of the sand can be tad tricker and many of us will spend hours looking for tips and tricks to put into practice.

However, when it comes to experience and knowhow, few are better equipped to provide bunker advice than nine-time major winner, Gary Player.

And over on social media, that’s exactly what Player has done for us all.

Gary Player shares his biggest tip for getting out of bunkers

Taking to his social media account on X, Player took time out to post one of his big tips for the amateur golfer when it comes to getting out of the sand.

“As you know, my belief for good bunker play is to “strike the match”. However, I believe that strengthening your grip is important as it allows for you to set your wrists quicker which then allows for you the better strike the match. Try it the next time you practice your bunker play, I am sure it will help,” Player revealed.

What Tony Finau has said about getting out of bunkers

Golf advice is everywhere in the modern game with YouTubers, former players, and current pros and coaches all there to offer their thoughts.

Of course, Player’s advice here is to be taken onboard and given his experience, it’s worth noting.

Meanwhile, Tony Finau has given his own advice on bunker play in the past, albeit he focussed on the stance and swing.

“The best bunker advice I have is a nice wide base in your set-up and then a low handle, and then you’re rocking the baby,” Finau said.

“Meaning, if you’re holding the baby in your arms, take it back, you want the head to be facing you and going through, you want the head to be facing you, and you don’t want it to wake up.”

With winter golf upon us here in the UK, there won’t be much time to put these tips into practice.

However, those over in the States or the Middle East can implement this immediately.
