Scottie Scheffler has always looked up to Lee Trevino since he was just a young child.

Both Scheffler and Trevino are members of the Royal Oaks Club in Dallas, Texas.

The three-time major champion spent a lot of time in and around the legendary Mexican golfer while he was growing up, and he undoubtedly learned a lot from the man with six major titles to his name.

Scheffler is now a PGA Championship winner, after grinding it out on the final day at Quail Hollow on Sunday.

It certainly wasn’t plain sailing for the man from Dallas during his final round. However, Scheffler gutted it out and produced one of his best rounds of all time, according to his coach Randy Smith.

The 15-time PGA Tour winner is the best ball-striker in world golf – something that Trevino will be able to relate to.

There were not many better than the 85-year-old during his prime at shaping the golf ball, and flighting it down.

Now Scheffler is emulating, or even bettering, what Trevino did.

What Scottie Scheffler told Lee Trevino as a child

It would take a brave man to bet against Scheffler passing Trevino’s haul of six major championships within the next few years.

Winning majors is obviously a very hard thing to do, but what makes the 28-year-old so good is that he makes it look easy.

And if Scheffler does go on to surpass Trevino’s tally of majors, the Mexican quite obviously won’t be surprised one little bit.

Trevino opened up on something that Scheffler told him back in Dallas when he was just a young child.

“He’d want to putt for nickels, but I wouldn’t because I couldn’t beat him. And he always had long pants as a little junior. We asked him, ‘Why aren’t you wearing shorts?’ And he said, ‘Because I’m going to be a pro someday, and pros don’t wear shorts.’ I’m telling you, I’ve never seen anybody hit a golf ball like that, even as a little kid.”

How many majors will Scheffler win?

In my personal opinion, Scheffler has the ability, motivation and mental strength needed to go on and win 10 or more.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised one little bit if he got close to Tiger Woods‘ haul of 15.

But how do the two players’ numbers compare at the age of 28?

Woods clearly had the edge on Scheffler when he was the same age as the Texan.

However, there is every chance that Scheffler will close in on some of Woods’ records, if he continues down the path he’s currently on.
