Butch Harmon is one of the most respected voices in golf but when it came to Scottie Scheffler winning his first Masters in 2022, the legendary coach was found extremely wide of the mark.
Harmon has made a career out of being one of the best coaches out and having worked closely with Tiger Woods and more, he knows what he’s talking about.
Now in more of an analyst role for the big tournaments, Harmon often crops up on UK television screens during Masters season.
And while ‘Butch’ is always a delight to listen to with his opinions, he suggested something about Scheffler back in 2022 that ended up completely wrong.

Butch Harmon’s suggestion about Scottie Scheffler that was completely wrong
Look, we can all make predictions on any sport and golf is hard as any to predict a winner of a tournament, purely because of the sizes of the fields and quality on display.
Nevertheless, going into the 2022 Masters, Scottie Scheffler was a firm favourite and the current world number one.
However, while Scheffler had won three times on the run up to the event and climbed the OWGR mountain to the summit, Butch Harmon actually suggested it might work against Scheffler.
“He has the best record at the moment and does it put a lot of pressure on him? You’re damn right it puts a lot of pressure on him,” Harmon commented.
“I mean he’s never been in this position. He’s never had to deal with the media attention that goes with being number one. I can remember back in 1999 when David Duval was number one and he was glad when he got off being number one because of the media attention it put on him, he just wasn’t used to it.
“Scheffler is definitely not used to it because he’s never had anything like it. So does he handle it? This is going to be a big week for him because how does he handle it, because other than the Tiger Woods story in the press rooms he’s the big story. They’ll be all over him, you’re number one in the world, how do you feel about The Masters, etc.”

Scottie Scheffler’s career since winning the 2022 Masters
Scheffler was the world number one in April 2022 for this event before he won and he has remained on top ever since.
Scheffler has just got better and better and his form, really, is quite frightening.
Since having his first Masters success in ’22, Scheffler has won 15 times on the PGA Tour, including three more majors – and another green jacket – in that period.

He has maintained and extended his world number one status, won an Olympic Gold medal, and continues to be the standard bearer both on and off the course for the PGA Tour.
So, while Harmon might have been right to suggest the pressure was on Scheffler in 2022, the world’s best player has proven Harmon was wrong to have such concerns.
With the 2026 season soon to be upon us, it will be interesting to see if Scheffler can somehow go up another notch.
