We’ve all probably grown up either watching Tiger Woods in great detail or being shown highlights of the best shots he’s ever hit but one man who knows Woods’ game in and out is one of his best buddies, Fred Couples.
Couples and Woods are well known as good friends on and off the course and if anyone can have an opinion on what might be the greatest shot Woods has ever hit, it’s Fred Couples.
Of course, Tiger has had some remarkable highlights at The Masters and TPC Sawgrass over the years – among others – while he’s also played some of The Open Championships with a degree of skill not seen by many.
However, while moments like ‘here it comes’ and ‘in your life’ are synonymous with Woods’ career and legacy, Fred Couples believes it is a lesser talked about shot that is right up there with one of Tiger’s greatest ever.

Fred Couples names the Tiger Woods shot he found ‘mind-boggling’
With Woods winning so many events in the 2000s era, it’s hard to choose just a single shot that defines just how good he was.
However, for Couples, there is a standout shot at the 2000 Canadian Open that simply blows him away.
Speaking on a clip shared by The PGA Tour Champions YouTube channel in 2024, Couples explained Woods’ brilliance.
“I was watching it and I went down the store on the 16th hole when he hit out of the bunker to about a foot. I just presumed they’ve both make birdie on 18 or he would and I went home and some guy said hello and I said ‘well how did the golf end up’?
“And he said ‘well Tiger hit the most unbelievable shot’. So I saw it on Sports Centre. I mean I’ve played the hole and I think it’s by far, one of the greatest shots I’ve ever seen.
“I mean Nicklaus wrapping his one iron at Pebble, hitting the flag, unbelievable shot. But this one, you know, it was mind-boggling.
“The other kid was on the green, 20 feet for eagle. Most people would have took it left somewhere. He took it right over the pin. He says it’s the greatest shot that didn’t hit the green and I laugh at that but yeah, one of the greatest shots I’ve ever seen.”
What Tiger Woods believes is his greatest ever golf shot
Everyone will have their favourite shot from Tiger Woods but from the man himself, it’s a different one to one many us would imagine.
For Woods, it’s a six iron he hit at the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine.
With Woods now into his 50s and injured again. we could very well have seen the best of what he has to offer in his career.
However, like everyone else who loves golf, many of us pine for just one more moment of magic from Woods and if he can come back from injury at some point, we’d all love him to produce just a few more moments of brilliance to remember him by.
