One of the single greatest things about golf is that you can compare yourself directly with the pros.
You cannot easily play at Old Trafford or step up to the plate at Yankee Stadium. But you can play some of the most difficult golf courses on the planet, which have tested the best players in the biggest events.
Obviously, that’s not the case for every major. You can’t play Augusta National on a whim, for example. But major championships do frequently go to public courses, and not all of them cost an arm and a leg to play.
So here is a list of the five cheapest major championship venues that you can play in America this year.
5. Pinehurst No. 2 (Pinehurst, NC)
2026 Estimated Rate: $450–$490
Pinehurst prioritizes resort guests, but it does allow day-of or short-window walk-on bookings for the iconic No. 2 course if there is an opening, so you can play the same course Bryson DeChambeau won his second US Open in 2024.

And if there isn’t availability, no problem! There are a number of incredible courses on site that you’d have a phenomenal time playing.
Pinehurst No. 2 is the most expensive on this list, but compared to the $600+ stay-and-play requirements of Pebble Beach or Whistling Straits, it’s the fifth most affordable major venue in terms of raw access.
4. Chambers Bay (University Place, WA)
2026 Estimated Rate: $290–$325
The site of the 2015 US Open is a massive, walking-only links course carved out of an old sand and gravel quarry. And because it is owned by Pierce County, it remains accessible to the public.
Where does Phil Mickelson rank among the all time golfing greats? 🤔
Rates vary by season, but you can usually find shoulder season rates in early spring or late fall for significantly less than you’d find in the summer.
So for around $300, you can test yourself on the course where Jordan Spieth claimed the US Open title.
3. Torrey Pines – South Course (La Jolla, CA)
2026 Estimated Rate: $260–$330
Host of the 2008 and 2021 U.S. Opens, the Torrey Pines South Course is iconic. It’s the place where Tiger Woods won America’s national open with a torn ACL.
Prices fluctuate based on the day of the week, with weekdays hovering around $260 for non-residents.

But if you want the major feel for even less, the North Course (which hosts the Farmers Insurance Open alongside the South) is usually under $200, though it hasn’t hosted a U.S. Open solo.
2. TPC Harding Park (San Francisco, CA)
2026 Estimated Rate: $200–$250
Host of the 2020 PGA Championship, Harding Park is a municipal gem. While San Francisco residents get a massive discount, non-residents can generally walk on for under $250.
PROVE US WRONG: You can’t name all four PGA Tour venues! ⛳
It’s a cypress-lined beauty that offers a professional-grade test without the $500+ price tag of its neighbors, so well worth the price!
1. Bethpage Black (Farmingdale, NY)
2026 Estimated Rate: $140–$160
The “People’s Country Club”, Bethpage Black, remains the undisputed king of value. While New York residents pay roughly half, the out-of-state rate for this multi-time U.S. Open and PGA Championship host is still the cheapest major experience in the country.
The catch? There are no carts allowed, so you’ll have to endure the same brutal walk as the Ryder Cup players in 2025.
Plus, demand is extremely high. You’ll need to be ready to book the second tee times open or join the legendary sleep in the parking lot tradition for walk-ups.
