The US Open at Oakmont this week is expected to be one of the most difficult challenges of all time at any major championship.
One of the lead contenders to win the US Open – Bryson DeChambeau – recently described Oakmont as a ‘diabolical’ test of golf.
Oakmont stretches out to around 7,400 yards, and has incredibly thick rough as well as lightning fast greens.
There will undoubtedly be some big numbers posted at the famed Henry Fownes design this week.
Only the strongest will survive at Oakmont, both mentally and physically.

And one man experienced more ups and downs than anyone else during the US Open 18 years ago this week.
Nick Dougherty recorded his only top-10 major finish at the 2007 US Open
The 2007 US Open at Oakmont was a real war of attrition.
Angel Cabrera won the tournament with a score of five-over par 285.
There were some awful scores recorded that week, including Ryan Palmer’s back-to-back 84s that saw him finish dead last.
However, Nick Dougherty – a talented 25-year-old at the time – actually performed really well, in spite of some truly shocking golf along the way!

He ended up in a tie for seventh at Oakmont in 2007, but incredibly, he made 15 bogeys and two double bogeys during the tournament.
Dougherty posted rounds of 68, 77, 74 and 71 to end the week on 10-over par.
Nick Dougherty’s best finishes in majors
Dougherty retired from playing and took to broadcasting at a very early age, when he was just 34 in fact.
But how did he fare in the major championships throughout his career?
Here are Dougherty’s best finishes in golf’s four biggest championships:
| Major | Venue | Year | Finish |
| US Open | Oakmont | 2007 | T-7 |
| Masters | Augusta National | 2008 | T-33 |
| The Open | Turnberry | 2009 | T-38 |
| The Open | Carnoustie | 2007 | T-42 |
| US Open | Pinehurst | 2005 | T-52 |
As you can see from those stats, Dougherty hardly enjoyed a stellar major career.
The Englishman had oodles of talent when he emerged on the scene more than two decades ago.
However, Dougherty never really fulfilled his potential, with his only top-10 major finish coming at the US Open at Oakmont in 2007.
