Things don’t come much tougher for professional golfers than a US Open at Oakmont.

Oakmont will host the US Open this year for the 10th time – more than any other venue on the rota.

Scottie Scheffler held the clubhouse lead at The US Open in 2016 – the last time the tournament was held at Oakmont.

One-handicap golfer Chris Solomon played Oakmont during tournament conditions earlier this month and shot an 88.

The 1904 Henry Fownes-design has since been renovated by Tom Fazio in 2015 and reconstructed by Gil Hanse in 2023.

The layout in Pennsylvania is incredibly long and has some of the thickest rough known to man lining either side of the fairways.

The greens are fast and undulating and when the US Open is held at Oakmont, it is usually only the mentally strong who survive.

One PGA Tour player in particular had an absolute disaster at Oakmont 18 years ago.

Ryan Palmer endured an extremely forgettable US Open at Oakmont in 2007

Back in 2007, Ryan Palmer was a 30-year-old up-and-coming star on the PGA Tour.

He had already safely tucked away a win on tour, but he was in for a rude awakening at Oakmont.

Angel Cabrera won the championship that year after finishing on five-over-par for the week.

So the course was clearly playing extremely difficult, even for the best players in the world.

And unfortunately for Palmer, he quite simply couldn’t handle it.

The man from Amarillo, Texas, posted back-to-back rounds of 84 to finish on 28-over-par for the week, and dead last in the field.

Palmer’s 36 holes consisted of two birdies, 16 bogeys, three double-bogeys, a triple bogey, a quintuple bogey nine and 13 pars.

Amazingly, he made a solid start to his first round and was even-par through six holes. Things took a sharp downward turn after that though.

To Palmer’s credit, he went on to enjoy a brilliant career on the PGA Tour, winning three more times at the Ginn sur Mer Classic in 2008, the Sony Open in 2010 and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2019.

The scores that won the US Open at Oakmont in the last seven events held there

If your game is slightly off, you can forget about making the cut at Oakmont, let alone winning the tournament!

Here’s how the scores to have won the US Open in the seven championships played at Oakmont since the end of the Second World War.

Year US Open held at OakmontWinnerWinning score
2016Dustin Johnson-4
2007Angel Cabrera+5
1994Ernie Els-5
1983Larry Nelson-4
1973Johnny Miller-5
1962Jack Nicklaus-1
1953Ben Hogan-5

If the rough is as thick as people are saying it is this week, even-par will be a great score for four rounds.

The likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau will all enter the week as heavily fancied.

Unfortunately for Palmer though, he’s not currently in the field for the 2025 US Open at Oakmont.

So unless something changes at the last minute, he won’t be able to right the wrongs of 18 years ago!
