The Players Championship returns to TPC Sawgrass this week, with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler among its previous winners.

Woods called the Players the fifth major when he won it for the first time in 2001, before repeating that success in 2013.

Scheffler is also a two-time winner of the Players Championship, with his titles coming back-to-back in 2023 and 2024.

He once again headlines the latest PGA Tour event, having just taken on the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

Russell Henley came out on top last time out, with Collin Morikawa finishing second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, with both players again in the field at TPC Sawgrass.

Fred Couples sets TPC Sawgrass course record at 1992 Players Championship

It is legendary figure Jack Nicklaus who boasts the most Players wins, having lifted the trophy on three occasions.

But also posting two wins like Woods and Scheffler was Fred Couples, who clinched the title in 1984 and 1996.

The iconic figure also had a tournament to remember in 1992, even though it was Davis Love III who won his first of two titles.

Couples shot a course-record 63 on Saturday that year to get within one shot of Love III, but that was as close as he would get.

Despite his superb effort, Couples remarkably fell back in round four to finish on seven-under at TPC Sawgrass.

Champion Love III surged to 15-under to take the title, with Couples’s final scorecard reading 73-71-63-74.

His superb 63 was tied by Jason Day in 2016, who like Love III ended on 15-under at the Ponte Vedra Beach course.

And unlike Couples, the Australian did manage to win the Players Championship during his record-equalling tournament, seeing off Kevin Chappell by four shots.
