Cameron Young finally broke his duck by entering the winner’s circle on Sunday and in doing so, he became the 1,000th winner in PGA Tour history.

Young won the Wyndham Championship at a canter, and chalked up his first ever PGA Tour victory in the process.

The 28-year-old made a big statement ahead of the Ryder Cup with his convincing win at Sedgefield Country Club.

Young blew away the field at the Wyndham Championship last week, after shooting a four-round total of 22-under par.

It was poetic justice in a way that the man who hadn’t won in 93 starts prior to the Wyndham became the 1,000th player to lift a trophy on the PGA Tour.

Professional golf tournaments have been recorded since the mid-1860s, so it has taken more than one-and-a-half centuries to reach 1,000 different winners.

Now, this is somewhat of a contentious subject, because the PGA Tour wasn’t officially formed until 1975, when the world’s best players broke away from the PGA of America.

However, going all the way back to the first recorded official professional golf tournament, there have been 1,000 different winners.

Cameron Young was the 1,000th winner, but who was the first?

That distinction falls to Mr Willie Park Sr. who won the 1860 Open Championship held at Prestwick Golf Club, in Ayrshire, Scotland.

Born in 1833, Park Sr. was 26 when he won the inaugural Open Championship, held in October 1860.

There were only eight entrants into The Open that year, and Park Sr. won the tournament with a three-round score of 174, with each round consisting of just 12 holes.

It’s incredible to think how much the game has changed since Park Sr. won the first event up to when Young became the 1,000th different man to win an event on the PGA Tour.

Everything you need to know about Willie Park Sr.

Born in Wallyford, East Lothian, in June 1833, Park Sr. was involved in golf from a very early age.

He began his working life as a caddie, before starting a golf equipment manufacturing business.

Park Sr. earned his money through playing a series of ‘challenge’ matches against the likes of Old Tom Morris.

He won four Open Championship titles throughout his career, all coming at Prestwick Golf Club.

Park Sr. passed away in July 1903 at the age of 70, but he left an indelible mark on the game.

He will forever be known as the first man to ever win an official professional golf tournament, and that is quite the legacy to leave.
