The Masters isn’t too far away in the golfing calendar, with many star names perhaps already looking ahead to the first major championship of 2025.

Scottie Scheffler has been backed to win the Masters this year, having won the tournament in 2022 and 2024.

Scheffler is currently taking on Torrey Pines at the Genesis Invitational, having been forced to delay the start of his season due to hand surgery.

The world number one won a stunning seven PGA Tour titles in 2024, including a four-shot Masters victory over Ludvig Aberg.

Both players could be in contention once more this time around, with Augusta National once again playing host.

Charles Coe posts lowest ever Masters amateur score in 1961

The iconic venue was the setting for the 25th Masters in 1961, when South African Gary Player became the first-ever international Masters winner.

But also breaking a record was runner-up Charles Coe, who finished joint-second with Arnold Palmer, one shot behind Player.

Two-time US Amateur champion Coe posted a seven-under total of 281, which to this day remains the amateur scoring record at the Masters.

The American carded rounds of 72, 71, 69 and 69 at Augusta, with Coe also posting the low last 54 hole score (209).

Nick Faldo emulates three-time Masters champion Gary Player at Augusta National

It was a phenomenal effort from Coe, but unfortunately eventual champion Player simply wouldn’t be beaten.

His rounds of 69, 68, 69, 74 resulted in an eight-under 280 finish, before going on to win the Masters again in 1974, and 1978.

Plenty of non-American Masters champions have emerged since then, with Player joined by Englishman Nick Faldo on three titles.

Spaniards Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal both won the major championship twice, as did German Bernhard Langer.
