Brooks Koepka has just sent a big statement of intent to Scottie Scheffler ahead of the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

The five-time major champion is looking to retain his title after winning by two shots at Oak Hill Country Club in 2023.

Playing at LIV Golf’s Singapore event this week, the big-hitting American is looking to fine-tune his game in time for the year’s second major.

Koepka has endured a mixed start to the LIV season. His highest finish came in Mayakoba in February.

Since then, the 34-year-old has teetered on the edge of the top ten and finished on 14-under last week in Adelaide.

Koepka has frequently spoken of his desire to be in top form for the major championships. Speaking after his first round at Sentosa Golf Club, he said: “It’s a process. It’s about not trying to peak this week or next week; it’s the week after. My confidence is there; it’s just that the results haven’t been there. That’s the whole goal, to make for major season, and that’s what we do.”

After his second round on the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia, Koepka appears to be peaking at precisely the right time.

He is currently sitting in solo lead on 12 under after a scintillating 64 on Friday. Starting on the first, the 34-year-old made three birdies on his first nine before making four more on the back to gain complete control of the Singapore event.

And ahead of the PGA Championship, Scheffler’s main competition could have emerged.

Can Brooks Koepka compete with Scottie Scheffler at Valhalla?

Koepka’s seven under is a statement that Scheffler will take note of. The dominant PGA Tour star has been immaculate since the turn of the year, with four wins in five reminiscent of Tiger in his prime.

It was always going to take one of the world’s former elites to regain top form, and that’s what could be happening here.

Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Jon Rahm are the other names that could, at their best, compete with Scheffler.

For the game of golf, Koepka’s form can only be a positive. Scheffler’s rise has been hugely impressive, but competitiveness is required to increase interest in the sport. Witnessing a peak Koepka take on Scheffler at Valhalla would be a sight to behold.
