Rory McIlroy’s relationship with the PGA Tour has definitely soured over the past couple of years.

When numerous players joined LIV Golf in June 2022, McIlroy, perhaps unintentionally, became the spokesman for the PGA Tour.

However, the Northern Irishman felt disillusioned somewhat when commissioner Jay Monahan oversaw an initial framework agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf in 2023.

McIlroy was kept in the dark and it would have been hard for him not to have felt betrayed. Since then, tensions between the two parties have simmered along in the background.

Back in August, the PGA Tour were said to be unhappy with McIlroy, after he decided to skip the first FedEx Cup playoff event.

And not long after that, McIlroy made it clear how happy he is with new PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp.

Make of that what you will. One thing’s for sure, he definitely seems to be more at ease when he’s playing back in Europe these days.

Something that happened back in 2023 may have been the catalyst for the ill-feeling that was to come between McIlroy and the PGA Tour.

Why Rory McIlroy was fined $3 million by the PGA Tour back in 2023

The PGA Tour’s Signature Event system was governed very differently two years ago than it is in the current day.

At the time, there were eight elevated events, and players were only allowed to miss one of those without consequence.

McIlroy missed out on playing in three of them this season – The Sentry, The RBC Heritage and The Memorial Tournament, but he was totally within his rights to do that without being disciplined by the Tour.

However, back in 2023, he had already missed one Signature Event when he decided not to tee it up the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Links.

As a result, McIlroy had to forego 25 per cent of his PIP (Player Impact Program) bonus. At the time, that bonus was worth $12m, meaning that the PGA Tour fined him an extortionate $3 million.

The rules are now different, with players free to pick and choose which Signature Events they wish to play.

Maybe McIlroy’s sacrifice was needed at the time, and he explained exactly why that may have been the case.

Rory McIlroy responds to $3 million PGA Tour fine

McIlroy responded when it came to light that he was being punished by the PGA Tour for missing more than one Signature Event in 2023.

He said: I had my reasons to not play Hilton Head and I expressed those to Jay (Monahan).

It was an easy decision, but I felt like that fine, or whatever, was worth that for me in order to get some things in place.

Fair play to the 2025 Masters champion. He very much marches to the beat of his own drum at this stage of his career and he will always choose where and when he wants to play.

That said, McIlroy is in a privileged position whereby he can afford to lose out on that kind of money.

However, it has to be said, receiving $9 million instead of $12 million is hardly the same as having $3 million taken away from you, is it?
