It is fitting that Patrick Reed has flirted with the idea of leaving LIV Golf with the five-year anniversary of his most recent win on the PGA Tour approaching.

Patrick Reed revealed on Sunday that he had not yet signed a contract with LIV Golf for 2026. In truth, it would be a huge shock if he was not in the field in Riyadh next month.

But it is worrying for LIV to have a question mark hanging over Reed’s future.

How Patrick Reed made PGA Tour history at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open

Of course, the PGA Tour will welcome Brooks Koepka back this week, with the five-time major champion teeing it up in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

That was the event Reed won by five shots back in 2021.

Unfortunately, some will remember the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open for Reed taking a controversial drop during the third round when his ball was deemed to be embedded in the ground.

It was subsequently revealed that Reed did everything correctly and was right to avoid any sort of penalty.

But the event also saw the 35-year-old make a bit of PGA Tour history on his way to winning.

Reed’s short game was at its very best at Torrey Pines. Remarkably, he hit just 61 per cent of the greens in regulation – leaving him down in 63rd place of the 79 players who made the cut.

And according to Justin Ray – as reported by Golf Digest – Reed became the first player to win a PGA Tour event by at least three shots while ranking outside the top 60 for greens in regulation since those records began.

The event that perfectly sums up Patrick Reed’s career

In many ways, that week probably summed up Reed’s career better than any other tournament he has teed it up in.

He has certainly attracted his fair share of controversy over the years. But it cannot be denied that he is sublime around the greens.

Do you think Patrick Reed is treated unfairly by golf fans?

He's certainly not the most popular player in the game…

In fact, Reed’s short game was compared with Seve Ballesteros by the Spaniard’s former caddie Billy Foster last week.

Some will never warm to Reed and be quite happy for him to remain on LIV in the years to come. However, it would surely be a boost for the PGA Tour to have him back at some stage.

It would certainly make things a lot more interesting.
