Gary Player enjoyed one of the greatest golfing careers ever, with a huge chunk of his success having arrived at The Masters.

Player is a nine-time major champion, with three of those victories having come at The Masters at Augusta National.

He also won The Open Championship on three occasions, with two PGA Championship wins and one US Open win also among his honors.

Player fittingly brought an end to his major championship career at Augusta, when he took on The Masters in 2009.

Gary Player’s two scores at Augusta in his final appearance at The Masters

The South African was 73 years old at the event, but patrons were simply glad to see the legendary figure up close one final time.

He did, however, fall short of making the weekend once more at Augusta back then, having shot scores of 78 and 83 for a 161.

Player missed the cut at The Masters in 2009, but was blown away by the huge support he received as he knelt on one knee in salute on the final hole.

Would you rather win The Open or hole the putt to retain the Ryder Cup?

The veteran said of the memorable scenes: “It was something you’ll never, ever forget. You’ll go to your grave knowing you had tremendous love showered upon yourself.”

He added: “I don’t think it’s about what I’ve meant to the Masters. It’s what the Masters has meant to me.”

Gary Player’s wins at The Masters

Player is among a select group of golfers to have won The Masters multiple times, with the list decreasing concerning those with three or more titles.

He is, however, behind six-time champion Jack Nicklaus, along with Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer on five and four respectively.

But Player does join Nicklaus and Woods in an even more exclusive group, having completed the career grand slam.

Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan have completed the feat too, with Rory McIlroy joining the group with his success at The Masters this year.
