Fred Couples’ longevity is one of the most impressive attributes possessed by anyone in the history of golf.

He was the Masters winner in 1992 and the oldest player ever to make the cut at the tournament, achieving this 31 years later at 63 years old by finishing one-over-par after the second round.

Couples led the Masters after two days in 2012 as he hoped to become the oldest ever winner of a major championship. And he’s still playing at Augusta National to this day, going one under in his opening round in 2025.

The American has a Green Jacket and 15 wins on the PGA Tour to his name, but he said that his round at age 63 at the SAS Championship was the best he had ever played.

Fred Couples shot a score lower than his age at the 2022 SAS Championship

Couples, aged 63, shot a bogey-free 12-under in the final round of the 2022 SAS Championship. That round won him the tournament by six strokes, and his score of 60 was the lowest final round in PGA Tour Champions history.

The Hall-of-Famer made a birdie on his final five holes of the front nine, and closed with seven straight to write his name in the history books.

The round was so impressive that it shocked the greatest player of all time, Tiger Woods, who called Justin Thomas about it.

Thomas said afterwards, “I think he was on 17 or 18. Tiger called me, and he’s like, ‘Are you watching this?’ I turned it on and watched him stripe it off 18 tee, stiff the iron shot, and make the putt.”

Couples said it was his greatest ever round after the tournament. He explained: “It’s easy to say because we’re standing here, but I think it’s the best round I’ve ever played. I hit a few loose shots and got away from them, but I made so many putts.

“I don’t know what other rounds I’ve ever shot on the Champions Tour that are close to 60, so this would probably be my best round and lowest score by far.”

It was an incredible round by anyone, let alone by a 63-year-old. Not everyone can say they played their best golf after turning 60!

Lowest-ever score on the PGA Tour Champions

Couples’ 60 might have been his best-ever performance on the golf course, but it wasn’t the lowest-ever score on the PGA Tour Champions.

That honour belongs to Kevin Sutherland, who is the only man to ever shoot a sub-60 round on the Champions Tour in its history.

Sutherland shot a 59 at 50 years old in 2014 at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. And it could have been even better because he bogeyed the 18th.

The American was nine-under through eight after opening with seven birdies and an eagle. He had the chance to score 58 with a par on the last, but he bogeyed it.

It was only Sutherland’s third start on the senior circuit, and in his other two rounds, he shot 71 and 74, so he ultimately didn’t win it.

But the score remains the only sub-60 round in the PGA Tour Champions history.
