Not many golfers have ever possessed the control with their irons that Sir Nick Faldo did in his prime.

Faldo is one of the greatest golfers of all time, with 43 worldwide professional victories to his name including six major championships.

The Englishman’s greatest strength was his exceptional control with his irons.

So it goes without saying that amateur golfers looking to improve their iron play should listen intently to any tips Faldo has to offer.

Predict who the Ryder Cup captains will be in 2027 🤔

Faldo has provided plenty of useful tips for amateur golfers throughout the years.

However, it could be argued that the best tips he has to offer concern ways in which you can improve your iron play.

Sir Nick Faldo’s three tips to help amateurs improve their iron play

Faldo’s iron play during his prime was akin to the approach play of Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler.

The Englishman simply doesn’t get the credit that he deserves for his exceptional ball-striking.

Faldo gave Me and My Golf his three best tips to help amateurs improve their ball-striking with their irons.

Those tips are: ‘Aiming correctly’, ‘Body to Target’ and ‘The Plan’.

Alignment is obviously the most important facet of great iron play.

It doesn’t matter how good you swing the club or strike the ball, if you’re not aiming correctly, you will always struggle.

Get some alignment sticks and work on training your brain to aim correctly on the driving range.

That should then be easily transferable to the golf course.

Faldo’s torso to target and visualizing tips

The ‘body to target’ tip from Faldo revolves around getting your belly button aimed at your target after you’ve struck the golf ball.

If you manage to do this, it means your motion through impact is spot on, and your ball-striking will improve as a result.

And finally, ‘the plan’.

Visualizing your shots before you hit them is one of the most important things for golfers to do.

Indecision is usually the root cause of poor golf shots.

If you can visualize the shot-shape and trajectory that you want to hit, you will be in a far better position to actually pull off the shot you have in mind.

Amateur golfers often find it incredibly difficult to improve their golf games. However, by following the three tips from Faldo laid out above, you should be able to instantly sharpen up your iron play.
