Michael Brennan became the second youngest player to win on the PGA Tour this year when the 23-year-old clinched the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort on Sunday.
Remarkably, Brennan has become only the seventh player since 1970 to win on the PGA Tour within their first three starts. He looked incredibly comfortable as he finished four shots clear of Rico Hoey.
It will make golf fans feel incredibly old to think that Brennan was not even alive when Tiger Woods completed the Tiger Slam at the 2001 Masters.
In fact, he was born the following year, in February 2002. That same week, the PGA Tour was at Torrey Pines for the Buick Invitational.
How the leaderboard looked at the 2002 Buick Invitational in the week Michael Brennan was born
The Buick Invitational – now known as the Farmers Insurance Open – is best known for being won by Tiger Woods on seven occasions. In fact, the 15-time major champion won five times in six years from 2003.
But in 2002, he was only able to finish tied for fifth. The damage was done with a 77 in the second round at Torrey Pines. No one who made the cut posted a worse score on Friday.
One shot ahead of Woods by the time all was said and done on Sunday was John Daly. Daly would be the only other player to win during Woods’ incredible run from 2003 onwards.

J.L. Lewis had the tournament within his grasp. However, he admitted to Sports Illustrated that he ‘choked’ having missed five putts of 15 feet or less on the back nine during the final round.
Lewis made a bogey on the 72nd hole to lose by one.
That meant that Jose Maria Olazabal secured what would prove to be the final PGA Tour win of his career – and his first since the 1999 Masters.
| Position | Player | Score |
| 1 | Jose Maria Olazabal | -13 |
| T2 | Mark O’Meara | -12 |
| T2 | J.L. Lewis | -12 |
| 4 | John Daly | -11 |
| T5 | Tiger Woods | -10 |
| T5 | Bob Estes | -10 |
| T5 | Rory Sabbatini | -10 |
| T8 | Chris Riley | -9 |
| T8 | John Rollins | -9 |
| T8 | Jerry Kelly | -9 |
How Jose Maria Olazabal made history with his win at Torrey Pines
Only Greg Chalmers went lower than the Spaniard in the last round. Olazabal shot a 65 to take the crown.
Incredibly, Olazabal made history with his win in San Diego. He became the first player from Europe to win the event, which was first played in 1952.
In fact, Olazabal was only the second non-American to triumph. Gary Player won in 1963.
The likes of Tony Jacklin and Bernhard Langer lost in playoffs.
Jon Rahm emulated Olazabal in 2017 – at the course where he would also win the US Open four years later.
And the Farmers Insurance Open is now an event which Brennan can add to his own schedule, with the 23-year-old able to prepare for the 2026 PGA Tour season.
