Just three players have finished second at The Masters on four occasions, with both Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus on that list.

Of course, no one has won The Masters more often than Jack Nicklaus. The Golden Bear triumphed at Augusta National on six occasions.

Meanwhile, Ben Hogan won in 1951 and 1953. The latter victory was Hogan’s first major win in a season that would see him also clinch the US Open and The Open Championship.

But for Tom Weiskopf, Masters heartbreak was never offset with a moment of glory on Augusta National’s hallowed turf.

Tom Weiskopf dealt with his fair share of Augusta agony

Weiskopf won 16 times on the PGA Tour during his career, with the high point coming at The Open Championship in 1973 when the American won by three shots at Royal Troon.

It could have very easily been one of many major wins for him.

Weiskopf seemed to work Augusta National out a lot sooner than most. He marked his Masters debut by finishing tied for 16th in 1968.

The following year saw his first runner-up finish, with George Archer winning by one shot. Weiskopf dropped a shot on his penultimate hole to fall back to six under par.

Between 1972 and 1975, Weiskopf finished second three times in four appearances at The Masters.

Perhaps the most agonising loss came in 1975, with Weiskopf actually leading heading into the final round. He was one shot clear of Nicklaus, with Johnny Miller a further three shots back.

However, a bogey on the 16th hole dropped Weiskopf a shot behind Nicklaus. And after failing to birdie either of the final two holes, he was left to endure another missed opportunity.

Weiskopf would actually finish in the top five in six more majors over the remainder of his career. However, the 1975 Masters would represent the final time he finished inside the top eight at Augusta National.

The four players to finish second at The Masters three times without winning

There are four players who have finished second three times without winning at The Masters, with Miller among them.

Greg Norman famously dealt with plenty of heartbreak in Georgia, while Justin Rose is the only player, other than Ben Hogan, to have lost two playoffs at The Masters.

Tom Kite was the only other player to finish second three times without ever winning a Green Jacket.
