Tiger Woods had been in contention to captain the USA at the 2027 Ryder Cup, but that has now been officially ruled out.

Woods is taking some time away from golf following his arrest for driving under the influence, for which the 50-year-old has submitted a plea of not guilty.

The legendary figure, who will now receive treatment overseas in a bid to protect his privacy, only just made his return to golf at TGL last month.

But now Woods faces a spell away from the game to prioritize his long-term health, with his absence set to include next year’s Ryder Cup.

He was seemingly the leading candidate to replace Keegan Bradley as USA captain, but he has now told the PGA of America that he won’t take on the role, which is both a blow for the team and a big boost for Team Europe.

Do you think we will ever see Tiger Woods play professional golf again?

Tiger Woods not being USA Ryder Cup captain is a big boost for Team Europe

Of course, strong physical and mental health is the most important issue for Woods right now, and time will definitely be needed for the American to receive the help he needs.

But his lack of Ryder Cup captaincy will certainly play into the hands of the European team, who are definitely the side to beat at Adare Manor next September.

Luke Donald and his players have claimed the bragging rights in each of the last two editions of the iconic tournament, lifting the Ryder Cup in 2023 and 2025.

They are now seeking a third successive title at Adare Manor, where they have the added boosts of momentum and home advantage.

Last September, the USA succumbed to a hugely disappointing loss on home soil, having not exactly been inspired by captain Bradley.

With Woods at the helm, the exact opposite situation could have transpired, with the USA players certain to have wanted to give everything they had for the golfing legend.

His mere presence could have been the difference on away soil, where the visitors will need all the help they can get to pull off a shock win.

Of course, his knowledge of the tournament and the game would also have been welcomed with open arms, while the home side may even have been intimidated by facing Woods on the course.

PGA of America support Tiger Woods’ Ryder Cup decision

The 2027 Ryder Cup is some way away right now, but long-term preparation is crucial for success at the event.

And the hosts have wasted no time in planning for Adare Manor, having already confirmed Donald as their captain once more.

He’s now chasing history in Ireland, aiming to become the first Ryder Cup captain to secure three successive wins.

What do you think about Luke Donald’s appointment?

Is this good or bad news for Europe?

And while he will be firmly focused on his own players, Donald will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on what his rivals are plotting, with their Woods setback certainly not ideal preparation.

But his health is rightfully of the utmost importance right now in the eyes of the PGA of America, as shared in a statement on X.

It read: “The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being.

“During this time, we are keeping Tiger in our thoughts and prayers, with sincere hope for his strength, comfort, and recovery.

“Tiger has meant so much to our Association and to the game of golf. Since his Ryder Cup debut in 1997, he has been an enduring part of the PGA of America family.

“His connection to our PGA of America Golf Professionals, and his lasting impact on the sport, have inspired generations and profoundly shaped the game.

“We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision.

“Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as captain of the 2027 US Ryder Cup team and we support his decision.

“The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup Captaincy when appropriate.”

It remains to be seen what route the PGA of America will go down with their next captain, but one certainty is their desperate need for a win.

The USA lost the 2025 Ryder Cup 15-13 at Bethpage Black, following their 16½-11½ defeat in Rome in 2023.
