Why Brandt Snedeker’s decision ahead of the Presidents Cup seems to make little sense

Brandt Snedeker will be aware that this year’s Presidents Cup is likely to act as something of an audition for a future Ryder Cup captaincy.

The 2025 Ryder Cup showed that Team USA desperately need to get on with putting foundations in place that will allow them to start closing the gap to the Europeans on a consistent basis.

Brandt Snedeker looks to be a natural successor to Jim Furyk for 2029 at Hazeltine – provided that Team USA avoid slipping up at Medinah when they face the Internationals later this year.

So it will be interesting to see some of the decisions the 45-year-old makes.

Appointment of Keegan Bradley seems bizarre

One of his first notable decisions involves appointing Furyk and Keegan Bradley as two of his assistant captains.

In truth, the decision to appoint Bradley seems very strange.

Admittedly, Bradley is having a poor year on the PGA Tour. He has more missed cuts than top 25 finishes, while he is yet to make it into the top 10 at any stage during the season.

Nevertheless, he is 20th in the Presidents Cup standings. With that, it is not out of the question that Bradley could yet go on an amazing run and force his way into contention to play at Medinah.

Bradley has won the Travelers Championship twice in the last three stagings of the event. Meanwhile, he has won two playoff events during his career. He could turn his fortunes around before too long.

The 39-year-old was set to be one of Furyk’s vice-captains for Royal Montreal in 2024. However, he stepped down from the role to concentrate on playing after receiving a pick.

Keegan Bradley could yet contend to play on the Presidents Cup team

If he is in a similar situation this time around, he will surely make the same decision. With that, it would have made a lot more sense to make Bradley one of the final additions to the backroom team if it was clear that he was not going to be playing.

It does appear to be a sign that Bradley could yet get another captaincy opportunity at some stage in the future.

However, after the 2025 Ryder Cup put Bradley on such an emotional rollercoaster, you would have thought that he would want a little longer to simply concentrate on playing – particularly after such a rocky season to date.
