The USGA cannot be happy with Wyndham Clark’s lead at Shinnecock Hills

Wyndham Clark looks to be cruising to his second US Open title.

The 2023 champion holds a six stroke lead with one round to play at Shinnecock Hills, after playing an incredible third round in difficult conditions.

Frankly, he’s looked the most composed player on the golf course through the first few days, managing to scramble for pars with a rock-solid short game, and sinking testing putts.

But Clark would not be the most popular player to win this event, and that’s not only among fans. It would be difficult to find a player that the USGA would want to win this event less.

Why the USGA cannot be happy about Wyndham Clark winning the US Open

Clark has attempted to make this year’s US Open somewhat of a redemption tour. Last year at Oakmont, he took his frustrations out on the club’s locker room, causing serious damage to the historic clubhouse.

This was a controversial incident, and one that Clark is keen to move on from. When asked about it during the week, the 2023 US Open winner said he hopes to win fans back over this week, and show them that he’s not defined by it.

Despite his performance at Shinnecock, it’s not working. Clark has been heckled throughout the tournament, with fans referencing the locker room incident from behind the ropes. He’s been met with some support, but there’s a large portion of people rooting against Clark this week.

What needs to happen for Wyndham Clark to lose the golf tournament?

The American has more than one hand on his second major title…

Among them may be the USGA themselves. Clark has done little to atone for damaging the Oakmont locker room last year. The last thing the USGA would surely want is Clark winning the very next US Open, therefore.

It’s a nightmare scenario for the USGA, as they prepare to hand Clark their coveted trophy for the second time.
