The Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club last week was a resounding success.
The event is co-sanctioned between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.
And after the success of the Scottish Open, the PGA Tour now surely must make one big change from 2028 onwards.
Tom Kim won the Scottish Open after a three-year hiatus from the PGA Tour winners’ circle.
It was a fantastic event to watch with some exceptional golf on display as the players battled the elements and the firm conditions.
One thing’s for sure, it was much more exciting to watch than some of the run-of-the-mill PGA Tour events which are played on Parkland golf courses.
The Scottish Open has just shown the PGA Tour the change they must make in 2028
Things are set to change on the PGA Tour from 2028 onwards.
Brian Rolapp recently announced that there will effectively be two leagues – the Championship Series and the Challenger Series.
The top 100 players will compete in the top tier, one that consists of around 20 tournaments, while the next 100 in line will compete on the Challenger Series.
In addition to those changes, Rolapp refused to rule out more of an international schedule for the fall.
And this is where the PGA Tour must learn from the success of the Scottish Open.
Rolapp should incorporate more links golf into the schedule.
How about playing more golf in Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales?
There are numerous high-profile links golf courses that we simply don’t see at all outside of the Open Championship.
Rolapp should make it one of his priorities to set up some tournaments at links golf courses during the fall schedule.
Links golf in America is also an option
The key point here is that they don’t all have to be outside of the United States either.
There are plenty of superb links courses in America, including the likes of Kiawah Island, Whistling Straits and Bandon Dunes.

While they are slightly different to the links courses in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the elements are still way more of a factor than they are at regular PGA Tour stops.
Links golf ensures that the game is played in its purest form.
We all saw just how much the players were tested at the Scottish Open with a completely different variety of golf shots being played.
