The Ryder Cup scenario facing Bryson DeChambeau that would have been unthinkable months ago

There is now good reason to think that there will be at least 10 years between Bryson DeChambeau’s first and second Ryder Cup appearances on European soil.

Jim Furyk handed Bryson DeChambeau a captain’s pick for the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National. Unfortunately, it proved to be a miserable week for the debutant, who was paired with both Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods to no success in France.

Who do you think can catch Wyndham Clark? 🤔

It is arguably entirely possible that Furyk will resist the urge to include him in his lineup for Adare Manor in 2027.

Bryson DeChambeau’s current form would be enough on its own for a Ryder Cup snub

Form-wise, DeChambeau is in a terrible position right now. The 32-year-old has now missed three major cuts in a row after failing to reach the weekend at the US Open.

He had looked set to help set the pace on Thursday at Shinnecock Hills. However, an awful start to his second round saw DeChambeau tumble down the leaderboard.

Obviously, there is a long way to go before the team for the 2027 Ryder Cup is finalised. However, any other player with four missed cuts in his last five majors would expect to face an uphill battle to prove themselves – particularly when they almost certainly will be relying on a pick.

History is also not on DeChambeau’s side.

Team USA are yet to get the best out of Bryson DeChambeau

As well as failing to make any contribution to the score in 2018, DeChambeau was one of the biggest disappointments on the American team at Bethpage last year.

There was so much excitement surrounding his return to the Ryder Cup stage. And yet, he managed to deliver just 1.5 points from five matches. Keegan Bradley also failed to settle on a partner for DeChambeau.

He may have been a positive addition to the team room. But DeChambeau plays the game in such a unique way that it was always going to be difficult to pair him with someone else.

He was not alone in that. Scottie Scheffler‘s Ryder Cup performances continue to baffle everyone. But Scheffler is the world number one by quite some way. Only injury could possibly stop Scheffler from being in the team next year.

DeChambeau also remains an outsider. It is not clear where LIV Golf will be by the time the 2027 Ryder Cup arrives. But the Crushers captain has recently suggested that he should not face sanctions if he returns to the PGA Tour due to what he believes he would bring to the tour.

Those comments are unlikely to have gone down well with those on the PGA Tour, particularly as DeChambeau’s presence has not been enough to help LIV sustain itself as a powerhouse in the current game.

DeChambeau is still a world-class performer. And there is still every chance that he will turn his form around and leave himself in a position where Furyk simply cannot overlook him.

However, given all the baggage that comes with DeChambeau at the moment, it does now seem entirely possible that team golf’s biggest advocate may miss the greatest team event of all.
