Scottie Scheffler will head to Shinnecock Hills next month for the U.S. Open as he looks to complete the career Grand Slam.
However, if he is to contend at Shinnecock, Scheffler needs to address one big problem that could well be his downfall.
The upcoming U.S. Open is one of the most eagerly anticipated major championships in some time, due to the sheer quality of Shinnecock Hills and the test that the golf course represents.

On paper, the 29-year-old world number one possesses all of the skills required to succeed at Shinnecock Hills.
However, he hasn’t been at his brilliant best on the PGA Tour so far in 2026.
Scheffler came up just short at The Masters last month and he only has one win to his name this season.
That said, he has still recorded three runner-up finishes and six top-5s. Anyone who has watched the 20-time PGA Tour winner this season, though, will have seen that something isn’t quite right with him.

Scheffler has not finished outside the top-25 in any tournament since August 2024 – a quite extraordinary record.
However, the Texan’s problems this season have been painfully obvious to see.
The fact that Scheffler has recorded so many strong results this season is a testament to his unbelievable ability to compete.
His driving and iron play have been nowhere near as precise as they usually are.
Meanwhile, his putting has been extremely streaky at times.
Scheffler’s first-round scoring issues have been well-documented, but it seems like he has addressed that particular problem now.
The really worrying thing for Scheffler fans is that his ball flight is nowhere near as neutral as it was last season.

At times, Scheffler has been aiming so far left that he actually has to hit a slice in order to get his ball back in the fairway.
Now, that problem is being masked this week at TPC Craig Ranch in Dallas, Texas, because the golf course is so soft.
However, there is no way the world number one will be able to contend at Shinnecock Hills next month if he is still hitting that shot shape with his driver, given the firmness of the fairways.
Scottie Scheffler needs to find a way to straighten out his ball flight with his driver if he is to have any chance of winning the U.S. Open in June.
The fact that his ball flight problem with the driver is being masked this week is certainly not ideal.
