Scottie Scheffler was seemingly briefly in contention to win the PGA Championship, but he ultimately fell well short at Aronimink.
Scheffler was out to defend his title at the second major championship of 2026, where he finished in a tie for 14th on two-under.
He carded rounds of 67, 71, 71 and 69 across the PGA Championship, finishing seven shots behind winner Aaron Rai.
Scheffler will undoubtedly be quick to analyze what went wrong, although he will already be well aware of one particularly disappointing area of his game from Aronimink.
Does Scottie Scheffler win either of the last two majors of 2026?
Just the US Open and The Open to go…
Scottie Scheffler will be disappointed with his putting at Aronimink
Scheffler clearly wasn’t at his very best at the PGA Championship, falling short of the level he produced in 2025 to lift the trophy.
But he particularly let himself down on the greens, having finished the week with 125 putts.
According to Justin Ray, that is just two shy of his most ever in a major championship, at both the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst and The Masters in 2023.
That will not only concern the American, but may also surprise him given how reliable he has been in that area in recent years.
Having previously not been a standout in his game whatsoever, putting has quickly become a major strength of Scheffler’s.
But that wasn’t the case at the PGA Championship, where he ranked 72nd for Strokes Gained: Putting and 55th for Putts per GIR.
Is Scottie Scheffler more likely to end up with 50 PGA Tour wins and 10 majors or 25 wins and 5 majors?
Have we already seen the best of Scottie Scheffler?
What Scottie Scheffler did well at the PGA Championship
Of course, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the world number one at Aronimink, which provided a stern test for the world’s best golfers.
And while Scheffler was no exception, particularly on the greens, he did continue his very high standards elsewhere.
The American ranked seventh for both SG: Off The Tee and SG: Approach to Green, and T1 for his driving accuracy of 69.64%.
| Total | Rank | |
| Birdies | 14 | T16 |
| Pars | 46 | T40 |
| Bogeys | 12 | T29 |
He’ll now look to carry that momentum into the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, which returns to the PGA Tour this week.
Scheffler is once again the defending champion, and will be seeking his second title of the season after his triumph at The American Express.
