Those associated with LIV Golf have not had a lot to be positive about in recent months, with doubts over the league’s future persisting.

It seems that the days of LIV Golf as we currently know it are numbered. The league is searching for new investment ahead of the 2027 season.

The news emerged in the days after The Masters. That perhaps explained why their players produced such a poor showing on the course at Augusta National.

A much better major for LIV Golf at the PGA Championship

Tyrrell Hatton was the only LIV star to finish inside the top 30 at the first major of the year. It did nothing to silence those who believe that playing on LIV does its players no favours whatsoever.

But the PGA Championship proved to be a much more positive week for those on the breakaway league.

Of course, Jon Rahm finished in a tie for second, while Cam Smith was five places further back. The Australian had an opportunity to tie the clubhouse lead when his fourth round concluded.

It was significant to have Rahm finish second and Smith make the top 10. Rahm had not registered a top five in a major since joining LIV, while Smith had missed six major cuts in a row.

A much-needed boost for LIV Golf at Aronimink

Elsewhere, Joaquin Niemann – who was not even at The Masters – and David Puig both finished inside the top 20 on one under par. They were both just one shot behind Scottie Scheffler.

Meanwhile, Martin Kaymer was one of the players tied for the lead after the opening round. And Dustin Johnson showed glimpses of his old form around Aronimink.

The US Open next month will mark two years since the last time a LIV Golf player has won a major.

The league would receive the biggest boost if that wait for another major champion ended soon. But given that LIV has faced so much criticism and dealt with so much speculation of late, the PGA Championship definitely felt like a step in the right direction.
