Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm have already debunked Brandel Chamblee’s Players Championship claim

Was Brandel Chamblee being purposely controversial by suggesting that the Players Championship holds more prestige than any of the four majors?

Or does Chamblee genuinely hold that opinion about the Players Championship?

I would suggest the truth lies somewhere in between, but there is one crucial factor that he failed to recognize in his argument.

What do you make of Brandel Chamblee’s comments on The Players Championship?

Chamblee raised some eyebrows with his comments on The Players…

“In every single way that a metric could be used to measure whether something is a major, the Players, to me, stands alone and above all the other four major championships as not just a major. It is in my estimation, the best major.“

Chamblee stunned golf fans with his Players Championship take on Friday.

When you look at the Players Championship, with all due respect to the other four major championships, it is the best field in golf. It is the deepest field in golf, the former PGA Tour pro insisted.

And by virtue of the fact that only one person in its 50 year history has managed to successfully defend it, I would argue that it is the hardest major championship to win.

All the others have had far surpassing numbers of those successfully defending it.

Brandel Chamblee’s Players Championship point debunked

The Golf Channel analyst carried on with his point.

So, especially since it moved to TPC Sawgrass, which, in my estimation, save one hole, is perhaps arguably the best golf course that they play a major championship on from a shot value perspective.

You can talk about aesthetics all you want, risk-reward holes, certainly, but I’m talking about a shot value standpoint.

You cannot touch TPC Sawgrass.

So in every single way that a metric could be used to measure whether something is a major, the Players, to me, stands alone and above all the other four major championships as not just a major. It is in my estimation, the best major.

Now, as eloquent as Chamblee is when he speaks, and as compelling and substantiated as his reasoning was, there was one huge flaw in his argument…

LIV Golf superstars Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm may well have something to say about Chamblee’s bizarre Players Championship claim.

Brandel Chamblee forgot about Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm

There is no doubt that the American and the Spaniard are two of the very best golfers in the world, despite what the Official World Golf Rankings say.

This is where Chamblee’s argument falls apart.

Which tournament would you like to see become the fifth major championship?

The Australian Open, for example, should almost be the fifth major. The market down there is huge with potential.

How can the Players be the strongest field in golf when DeChambeau and Rahm haven’t played in the tournament since 2022 and 2023 respectively?

Let’s not forget, the likes of Patrick Reed, Tyrrell Hatton, Joaquin Niemann and Cam Smith are not allowed to play at TPC Sawgrass either.

The strongest fields in the game are the four major championships, there is no question about that.

Chamblee got caught up romanticizing about the past while completely forgetting that some of the best golfers on the planet are not permitted to compete at The Players Championship.
