When Brian Rolapp was named as the PGA Tour’s new CEO in 2025, he made it very clear that he was not afraid to make big changes.

In fact, Rolapp insisted that he was not scared to make some bold moves, while being respectful of the long-standing traditions of the game.

The PGA Tour schedule for 2027 has already been changed ever so slightly.

The Sentry will not be on the PGA Tour calendar next year, and the season will start on the west coast in late January.

However, 2028 will see some really big changes, including the likes of larger fields and, fewer tournaments and a more condensed schedule.

And for fans of the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, the planned changes are very good news indeed.

New PGA Tour schedule is great for Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy fans

Big changes will be coming to the PGA Tour from the start of the 2028 season onwards.

According to Sports Business Journal, the new PGA Tour schedule will feature 16 ‘Track 1’ events, three playoff events and four major championships.

Each ‘Track 1’ event will consist of 12-man fields with halfway cuts.

Now, the beauty of this new proposed schedule is that the best golfers in the world usually play around 18-20 events per season anyway.

So golf fans will be guaranteed the very best golfers on the planet playing together almost every single week.

There will, of course, be 20 ‘Track 2’ as well that will run concurrently with the ‘Track 1’ tournaments, so the PGA Tour are certainly not disposing of their meritocratic philosophy.

Top stars to play against each other more regularly

Rolapp’s new plan should ensure that we get to see Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and all of the other top stars competing against each other on a more regular basis.

And that can only be a good thing for professional golf.

The PGA Tour are looking at expanding into three potential new markets as well.

Boston, Philadelphia, Denver, Nashville and San Francisco are five of the cities currently under consideration.

Exciting times lie ahead for PGA Tour fans, with a more condensed schedule and the biggest stars competing against one another more regularly.
