Zach Johnson has suggested that there is a potential superstar emerging on the PGA Tour following their performance at the John Deere Classic, insisting that he seems to do all parts of the game extremely well.

The final tournament on American soil before the Scottish Open and Open Championship is now done and dusted, and it is fair to say that the scoring was extremely low – with a score of 20 under par not enough to finish inside the top 10 in Illinois.

It was Davis Thompson who secured his first ever PGA Tour win at the John Deere Classic, with the 25-year-old largely putting the tournament to bed inside six holes of his final round – having moved to five under par for the day.

The youngster would go on to win by four, and that prompted 1991 Open champion Ian Baker-Finch to compare Thompson with world number one Scottie Scheffler due to the impressive start he has made to his PGA Tour career.

Zach Johnson says PGA Tour youngster is a potential superstar

Some were baffled by the comparisons between Thompson and Scheffler, but 2023 American Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson insisted that there is something special about Sunday’s winner.

“We kind of saw it coming about two or three months ago. He did some changes, I don’t know what they were, but changes to the make up of his golf bag and it started to click. He’s in that talent realm where what I’m seeing and what we’re seeing, if you know him, it’s not surprising,” he said.

The journalist replied: “Are we looking at a potential superstar?

“I think the key word there is potential. I don’t think that’s inaccurate or off beat. I think that’s a pretty, potential is a vague word, but I think you said it,” Johnson added.

“What does Davis do well? Well, everything he does well. It’s not like he’s the longest player or the best wedger or the best putter. But he does everything really, really well. So I’m not surprised. He hits is very solid in the middle of the face and very straight. He and his caddie Joe, have something going on that’s very good.”

Davis Thompson has plenty to still prove

Thompson has definitely been the standout player over the last two weeks, as he also finished inside the top 10 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. Before that, he finished inside the top 10 at the US Open.

It is a huge call to suggest that he is looking like a potential superstar so early on in his career, particularly when he has more missed cuts this season than top 10 finishes.

But this is definitely a golden era in the sport, with so many exciting prospects now giving great accounts of themselves on the PGA Tour – and Thompson is perhaps the brightest talent of the lot.
